Thank you for raising awareness! We need to do what we can to contribute to ensure ALL patients have reliable access to the #plasma therapies they need, in #Canada & around the globe! Thank you to all who donate 💛

The most fascinating public policy issue you've never thought about - the legal and ethical debate over paid plasma donations. In this episode of @CanadaJusticeTV I interview @petermjaworski and patient Kate Vander Meer

Patients continue to cheer repeal of the ban on paid plasma in Alberta. Latest statement from @CIPONational:
“Since the COVID-19 pandemic began, plasma donations have dropped dramatically... which puts patients’ lives at risk.
...Bill 204 is a step in the right direction.”
How could Bill 204 be so simple? Because The Voluntary Blood Donations Act never protected patients (or donors) in the first place! https://t.co/QtWKWOQfFo
#Canada needs to encourage infrastructure to turn itself into being a contributor to the global #plasma supply rather than a LARGE drain on the global supply. MLA Tany Yao's Bill 204 is a step in the right direction!
No, that's what happened when the VBDA was passed in 2017. Thankfully the federal gov't listened to patient voices & did not pass the VBDA. Canada is NOT helpless in the global plasma market. Pretending we are is an insult to all patients globally who don't have the access we do.
It was a mistake for Alberta to ban paying Albertans for plasma in 2017.
Today, MLA @TanyYao has fixed this mistake. His Bill will lift the ban, will increase plasma collections in Alberta, and will help ensure patients have access to the therapies they need.
Thank you, Tany!
We are so excited to see that Bill 204: The Voluntary Blood Donations Repeal Act has passed third reading in the #Alberta Legislature! 🎉
Thank you so much @TanyYao & his team, and to each and every supporter/advocate who helped make this happen for #patients! 💛

Of course #paidplasma is just as safe, about 90% of the #plasmatherapies used by patients around the world are derived from paid donations! Demand was much lower & safety standards/screening/processing were much different back when Krever & the WHO gave their recommendation.
Both Canadian Blood Services and Health Canada (along with every national blood operator around the world) have said that paid plasma is *just as safe as* unpaid plasma for plasma protein therapies. Here’s Dr. Graham Sher saying so:
Today, I turn #30. I spent my first 30 years letting the world shape me and now I’m going to use my next 30 years to shape the world.
Let’s start by helping #plasmatherapy#patients have reliable access to the therapies they need: https://t.co/5yWhSskBKc

@LisaWeinberger SUBQ/SCIG is wonderful. Next to no side effects. Done at your own convenience. Steady dose instead of a peak & fall. Highly recommend!
