Reporter Catherine Herridge — one of the most respected investigative journalists in America — sat before Congress and delivered testimony that should send a chill through every newsroom in the country.

When CBS News laid her off in February, they didn’t just let her go. They 𝐥𝐨𝐜𝐤𝐞𝐝 𝐡𝐞𝐫 𝐨𝐮𝐭 𝐨𝐟 𝐭𝐡𝐞 𝐛𝐮𝐢𝐥𝐝𝐢𝐧𝐠 and 𝐬𝐞𝐢𝐳𝐞𝐝 𝐡𝐮𝐧𝐝𝐫𝐞𝐝𝐬 𝐨𝐟 𝐩𝐚𝐠𝐞𝐬 𝐨𝐟 𝐡𝐞𝐫 𝐫𝐞𝐩𝐨𝐫𝐭𝐢𝐧𝐠 𝐟𝐢𝐥𝐞𝐬 — including confidential source information. Herridge had been working with sources to expose government corruption and misconduct. Those sources went silent.

“𝘔𝘶𝘭𝘵𝘪𝘱𝘭𝘦 𝘴𝘰𝘶𝘳𝘤𝘦𝘴 𝘴𝘢𝘪𝘥 𝘵𝘩𝘦𝘺 𝘸𝘦𝘳𝘦 𝘤𝘰𝘯𝘤𝘦𝘳𝘯𝘦𝘥 𝘵𝘩𝘢𝘵 𝘣𝘺 𝘸𝘰𝘳𝘬𝘪𝘯𝘨 𝘸𝘪𝘵𝘩 𝘮𝘦 𝘵𝘰 𝘦𝘹𝘱𝘰𝘴𝘦 𝘨𝘰𝘷𝘦𝘳𝘯𝘮𝘦𝘯𝘵 𝘤𝘰𝘳𝘳𝘶𝘱𝘵𝘪𝘰𝘯 𝘢𝘯𝘥 𝘮𝘪𝘴𝘤𝘰𝘯𝘥𝘶𝘤𝘵, 𝘵𝘩𝘦𝘺 𝘸𝘰𝘶𝘭𝘥 𝘣𝘦 𝘪𝘥𝘦𝘯𝘵𝘪𝘧𝘪𝘦𝘥 𝘢𝘯𝘥 𝘦𝘹𝘱𝘰𝘴𝘦𝘥.”

Think about what that means. A major American news network confiscated a journalist’s confidential files — the kind of records that exist specifically to protect whistleblowers — and the sources who trusted her with information about government wrongdoing went into hiding because they feared retaliation.

Herridge had already been held in 𝐜𝐨𝐧𝐭𝐞𝐦𝐩𝐭 𝐨𝐟 𝐜𝐨𝐮𝐫𝐭 for refusing to reveal her sources on a national security story. She’s been fighting in federal court for 𝐭𝐰𝐨 𝐲𝐞𝐚𝐫𝐬 and now faces fines of $𝟖𝟎𝟎 𝐚 𝐝𝐚𝐲 for protecting those sources.

She told the committee one of her children recently asked her “𝘪𝘧 𝘐 𝘸𝘰𝘶𝘭𝘥 𝘨𝘰 𝘵𝘰 𝘫𝘢𝘪𝘭, 𝘪𝘧 𝘸𝘦 𝘸𝘰𝘶𝘭𝘥 𝘭𝘰𝘴𝘦 𝘰𝘶𝘳 𝘩𝘰𝘶𝘴𝘦, 𝘢𝘯𝘥 𝘪𝘧 𝘸𝘦 𝘸𝘰𝘶𝘭𝘥 𝘭𝘰𝘴𝘦 𝘰𝘶𝘳 𝘧𝘢𝘮𝘪𝘭𝘺 𝘴𝘢𝘷𝘪𝘯𝘨𝘴 𝘵𝘰 𝘱𝘳𝘰𝘵𝘦𝘤𝘵 𝘮𝘺 𝘳𝘦𝘱𝘰𝘳𝘵𝘪𝘯𝘨 𝘴𝘰𝘶𝘳𝘤𝘦𝘴.” She said she wanted to tell her child it was impossible — but couldn’t.

Then Herridge delivered the line CBS doesn’t want anyone to hear: “𝘊𝘉𝘚 𝘕𝘦𝘸𝘴’ 𝘥𝘦𝘤𝘪𝘴𝘪𝘰𝘯 𝘵𝘰 𝘴𝘦𝘪𝘻𝘦 𝘮𝘺 𝘳𝘦𝘱𝘰𝘳𝘵𝘪𝘯𝘨 𝘳𝘦𝘤𝘰𝘳𝘥𝘴 𝘤𝘳𝘰𝘴𝘴𝘦𝘥 𝘢 𝘳𝘦𝘥 𝘭𝘪𝘯𝘦 𝘵𝘩𝘢𝘵 𝘐 𝘣𝘦𝘭𝘪𝘦𝘷𝘦 𝘴𝘩𝘰𝘶𝘭𝘥 𝘯𝘦𝘷𝘦𝘳 𝘣𝘦 𝘤𝘳𝘰𝘴𝘴𝘦𝘥 𝘢𝘨𝘢𝘪𝘯 𝘣𝘺 𝘢𝘯𝘺 𝘮𝘦𝘥𝘪𝘢 𝘰𝘳𝘨𝘢𝘯𝘪𝘻𝘢𝘵𝘪𝘰𝘯.”

She noted that her former employer 𝐅𝐨𝐱 𝐍𝐞𝐰𝐬 — the network the media establishment loves to attack — has been funding her legal defense. “𝘕𝘰𝘵 𝘮𝘢𝘯𝘺 𝘫𝘰𝘶𝘳𝘯𝘢𝘭𝘪𝘴𝘵𝘴 𝘤𝘰𝘶𝘭𝘥 𝘤𝘰𝘶𝘯𝘵 𝘰𝘯 𝘢 𝘧𝘰𝘳𝘮𝘦𝘳 𝘦𝘮𝘱𝘭𝘰𝘺𝘦𝘳 𝘵𝘰 𝘴𝘶𝘱𝘱𝘰𝘳𝘵 𝘢 𝘤𝘰𝘴𝘵𝘭𝘺 𝘢𝘯𝘥 𝘷𝘪𝘨𝘰𝘳𝘰𝘶𝘴 𝘥𝘦𝘧𝘦𝘯𝘴𝘦 𝘰𝘧 𝘵𝘩𝘦 𝘍𝘪𝘳𝘴𝘵 𝘈𝘮𝘦𝘯𝘥𝘮𝘦𝘯𝘵.”

CBS News seized the files of a journalist who was investigating government corruption. They didn’t fire her for getting it wrong. They fired her for getting too close.
