@AnnaHollinrake@gamingthemind@psychtechuk . talks about potential for gentle games to be a downtime, healing space for people. Lots to come from Anna. A great talk.
Now listening to @AnnaHollinrake and the power of gentle games. First thing to say, her art is AMAZING. Talks about the importance of games for her- especially the gentler, more peaceful variety. @gamingthemind@psychtechuk#psychtech19
@AnnaHollinrake@gamingthemind@psychtechuk . home is the most helpful feature of games. Animal crossing, Stardew valley are good examples. Home as a place to do small tasks in your own time is exemplified by Breath of the wild.
Apart of me was an app for bereaved children that she worked on.
@AnnaHollinrake@gamingthemind@psychtechuk Journey is a simple example of one on one interaction. (For people who are not idiots like me, Max, who didn't realise it was multiplayer). LGBT+ people also flock to games, especially Bioware games.
Representation of self is hugely important.
@AnnaHollinrake@gamingthemind@psychtechuk . conventional games can be played in non traditional ways. For example super smash Bros played as a digital dollhouse in Anna's past. A form of wonderful escapism. A sense of agency and control. Avoidance of pain and rumination.
Community through gaming important
.@PeteEtchells now on the alleged links between video games and aggression. Problem is that studies are not standardised, and results depend on analysis. Therefore the potential for confirmation bias is enormous. @psychtechuk@gamingthemind
@PeteEtchells@psychtechuk@gamingthemind . gives example of sea hero quest as an example of games as a means to harvest research data. Important question is why game? Motivation for gaming is variable between people, and over time. For Pete this has included coping with and processing grief. #psychtech19
