The state of Rajasthan is currently conducting the second statewide common FLN assessment for their 4.6M students in Grades 3 to 8 (Hindi, English, and Maths). People often ask me - "Why are you creating a technology to digitize paper in education (SmartPaper @smartpaperai)? Paper is only going to go away!" Today, paper contains arguably the largest volume of educational data in the world. Every child in developing or developed nation uses pencil and paper as learning tools. This vast amount of novel handwriting data (aka ImageNet for Education) is something that AI researchers have never seen at scale. The wealth of foundational learning data on paper workbooks can immediately provide us a picture of learning trajectories across the globe without significantly investing in technology and communication infrastructure.

Population scale educational data is not 10 years away, it is here today with paper-digital integration. In fact, it is a vision realized in India's Rajasthan state for 4.7 million public school students (link in the comment).

SmartPaper @smartpaperai is designed to democratize access to educational data, and provide authentic assessment data to all stakeholders in education: students, teachers, parents, and admins. Our API enables edtech platforms to collect digital data from offline sources, enhancing their capability to personalize the content to children's learning needs. AI has transformed the assessment practice for 4.5 million students and 240,000 teachers in India's Rajasthan state.

This week, 12 million exam papers have been scanned through the government's RKSMBK mobile app and automatically scored using @smartpaperai Assessment AI. The massive competency learning data will empower teachers to personalize teaching for their students and inform parents with report cards to help their kids better at home. While other states take months to give results back to their classrooms and parents, Rajasthan has leapfrogged by using AI to provide faster feedback while lowering the work of ever-burdened teachers. Kudos to the state for leading the way in using AI for equitable impact!
