Justice Clarence Thomas choked up on stage as he revealed the vow he made when both his grandparents died suddenly in 1983: to live the rest of his life as a memorial to theirs.
Thomas, abandoned by his father at age seven, was raised by his maternal grandparents in segregated Savannah, Georgia. His grandfather Myers Anderson — raised by a freed slave — had only nine months of formal education. His grandmother Christine made it to the sixth grade. Yet education was their "crown jewel," and self-reliance was the only philosophy they preached.
Thomas said his grandfather's favorite response when young Clarence said he couldn't do something: "Old man can't is dead. I helped bury him."
The biggest vulnerability of the postwar liberal consensus is that it’s boring. “All people are the same; all places must become the same; everyone must ‘be nice;’ an entire subspectrum of human thought & emotion is too dangerous to even mention.” The idea that life could be different from this, that it could be dangerous and fascinating, that history could continue, is extremely seductive
@n_etExplorer18@Robotbeat Reasonably so, I just think he undersells how much of an achievement it was because the retard right will immediately group it with all of the deplorable Covid measures
@n_etExplorer18@Robotbeat A lot of the base was and is vehemently opposed to lockdowns and the mandate so he’s hesitant to say anything about Covid measures except condemnation.
@dog_pessi@fredsoda I am saying cultural imperialism is BAD, and in your vanity and ego you cannot even find it in yourself as someone from a country literally being shelled by Israel to agree. This is why no one takes Arabs seriously. The sooner we don’t have to deal with each other, the better.
@NewWorldAnglo@ZoomerHistorian I would have tremendous respect for Turks if they just accepted that they are descendent from a mighty imperial power whose triumphs outnumber its atrocities just as we are but they insist on acting like third worlders and crying dindunuffin
@CatRedFront French Socialists genuinely cannot accept that their economy does not produce enough for the state to maintain the luxurious western lifestyle and hefty social safety net to which they have become accustomed and we are very much heading in the same direction.
@YeatYez@kiirokotei “Coping and seething” by thinking the war on terror was a dumb waste of time that neither side got anything valuable out of? Would you have PREFERRED a nuke on Kabul? Do you LIKE western interventionism?
@onsenregime@juice8882@souljagoyteller Americans have a much lower percentage of humanitarian and chain entries. It’s the reason why Pakistanis in the US earn 2.5 times more than Pakistanis in Britain, but Somalis (>99% humanitarian origin) preform the same. They also had the benefit of basically no irregular Syrians.
@stronk66215@perianudan@DominionSoc I’m a quarter Romanian a quarter Ir*sh and half Anglo-Québecois dawg the only foreign interest I advocate for is the dominion of the British Empire over North America. Is it third worldist to speak more than one language?
@perianudan@DominionSoc People are allowed to be concerned that Persians, otherwise a paragon of positive immigration when integrated into existing communities, have formed an ethnic enclave where Farsi is the second most spoken language. Are you a segregationist? Do you believe this is a good thing?
