Major Cabinet Reshuffle Likely in Modi Government

As the Narendra Modi government completes two years of its third term, a major reshuffle of the Union Cabinet is expected soon. Reports suggest that up to 38 ministerial portfolios may be changed through the removal of some ministers, shifting of responsibilities, and the induction of new faces.

The proposed changes are believed to be linked to the BJP's political strategy for upcoming elections in states as well as preparations for the 2029 Lok Sabha elections.

One of the biggest possible reforms is the merger of the Railways Ministry and the Road Transport Ministry into a single surface transport ministry. There are also reports that some experienced former bureaucrats could be included in the Cabinet.

Several key ministers may get new responsibilities. Reports suggest that Commerce Minister Piyush Goyal could be moved to the Finance Ministry, while Railways Minister Ashwini Vaishnaw may be given Commerce. The future role of Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman is also being discussed.

Some ministers are expected to leave the government or may be dropped after poor electoral performances.

Ministers of State Harsh Malhotra and Pankaj Chowdhury could also step down to focus on their new responsibilities in the BJP organization.

Other leaders who may be removed include Jual Oram, Pralhad Joshi, Durga Das Uikey, and Sanjay Seth, as the BJP looks to bring in younger leaders and improve regional representation.

At the same time, several new faces are being considered for ministerial positions. These include Tarun Chugh, Kamaljeet Sehrawat, Sanjeev Balyan, Vijay Baghel, and Rup Kumari Choudhary. The BJP is also looking at leaders from Dalit and tribal communities to strengthen its support base before upcoming elections.

West Bengal is expected to receive special attention due to the BJP's recent gains there. Jyotirmay Singh Mahato is among the leaders being considered for a ministerial berth. In Maharashtra, Shrikant Eknath Shinde may be inducted to give representation to the Shiv Sena faction led by Eknath Shinde.

Another important possibility is that Maharashtra Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis could be brought to the Centre as a Cabinet minister.

If the reshuffle takes place as expected, it could be one of the biggest changes in the Modi government's Cabinet since the start of its third term.
