An AI agent rewrote its own code in the middle of a Pokémon session.

The system, called Exo, inspected the game's memory and located the values holding the character's position, active Pokémon, and whether a battle had started. It then modified its integration so those details would reach the model before its next move.

That solved the immediate problem, but the same permission could make a bad edit far more destructive. A failed rewrite might also damage its history, expose credentials, or disable the mechanism needed to recover.

In a new Latent Space episode, Berkeley researcher Alex Krentsel explains how to let an agent change its capabilities while keeping its memory, secrets, and emergency recovery system beyond its control.

His design separates Exo into three parts.

A protected core stores the conversation history, API keys, and saved snapshots. An editable component decides which context reaches the model, what instructions it receives, and which tools it can use. A separate sandbox carries out the commands.

Exo can modify the editable part while it is working. A guardian process then rebuilds the new version and lets it take one step. If the revision fails, the previous state returns automatically.

The Pokémon example is only one part of the conversation.

I recommend watching the full video if you are interested in agents that can modify or clone themselves, recover from a bad update, and avoid gaming the goals they are given.
