People who treat every relationship as transactional don’t actually have friends. They keep people around so as long as they are useful to them.

That’s why they’re baffled watching people disagree and stay friends. They assume everybody else works the same way, and when they see a friendship survive disagreements (including political ones), they misread that as something nefarious. But this used to be a normal thing.

Social media has been great. But it has also created characters and bubbles. People speak confidently, but are completely detached from reality.
