Georgetown University Center for Global Health and Impact, through Georgetown Global Health Nigeria, with funding and collaboration from the United States Centers for Disease Control and Prevention launches the Public Health Emergency Preparedness, Response and Recovery (PHEPRR) Fellowship for Africa.
This initiative aims to bolster surge capacity and workforce development across West African countries to address ongoing health challenges.
Dr. Farah Hussain of US CDC Nigeria stressed the urgency of tackling diseases like Ebola and cholera, highlighting the strain on resources.
Dr Hussain spotlighted the importance of community capacity in emergency response and the critical role of a trained workforce in preventing localised outbreaks from escalating.
Piring’ar Mercy Niyang of Georgetown University Center for Global Health Practice and Impact underscored the programme’s culmination after two and a half years of planning, aiming to bridge gaps identified during the COVID-19 pandemic.
The fellowship targets mid-career public health professionals, offering leadership competencies in emergency management aligned with International Health Regulations (2005).
The 5-day fellowship will establish a standardised training programme for public health professionals to better respond to emergencies, accentuating community capacity and workforce training.
Expected outcomes include surge operations testing, enrollment in a knowledge-sharing network and facilitation of regional collaboration efforts, representing an innovative approach to health system strengthening in West Africa and beyond. #PublicHealth #EmergencyPreparedness #GlobalHealth #Healthcare #CDC #GeorgetownUniversity #CapacityBuilding #WorkforceDevelopment #HealthChallenges #HealthSystemStrengthening
