Picture balancing barefoot on a round, floating pole about six inches across, while the river current rolls it under your feet. People in southwest China have been crossing water like this for more than a thousand years.
The skill is called single bamboo drifting, or du zhu piao. One person stands on a single stalk of bamboo and uses a second, thinner pole as an oar. There is no boat and nothing tied to the feet, just a cut stalk and a lot of practice.
The main pole is a thick, straight bamboo, around 8 meters long (about 26 feet) and 15 centimeters across, roughly six inches. It is not hollowed out or tied into a raft. Workers cut one straight stalk, dry it in open air for about three weeks, and use it as is. The oar is a thinner stalk, roughly 4 meters long, swept side to side to move forward and stay upright.
Balance is the whole game. A round pole on moving water tips with every small shift of weight, and each stalk curves a little differently, so the balance point keeps moving. Going barefoot lets the rider feel those tiny corrections. The thin oar is the only tool for moving and steering, and it is also what catches you before a fall.
It started as plain transport. Guizhou is mountain country, and for a long time roads barely reached the villages along the Chishui River. Bamboo grew thick on the slopes, so people floated cut stalks downstream to sell in neighboring Sichuan and Chongqing, and crossed the river to market by standing on a single one. The bamboo was both the cargo and the boat.
Later it became performance and sport. The dancing version on the water got the nickname "water ballet." In 2021 China added single bamboo drifting to its national list of intangible cultural heritage, its official list of traditions worth protecting. It has been a competitive event since 2011, and athletes now race it in 60-meter sprints across open water. Beginners spend months on shallow drills first, and competition teams train four to five hours a day through the summer.
What began as the cheapest way to move timber to market is now raced against the clock and judged for its grace.

Everyone's staring at red numbers this week. Almost nobody's noticing the thing that actually matters: they're all red at the same time.
Korea down 10% in a day. Japan, Europe, US futures all sliding together. Crypto rolling over. Gold off its highs. Different countries, different asset classes, different stories… one direction.
Here's what that means, in plain terms.
In a healthy market, things disagree. Stocks zig, bonds zag, gold does its own thing - because each is pricing its own reality.
But when everything starts moving as one block, that's not a bunch of separate markets anymore. That's a single, giant, leveraged bet wearing a hundred different tickers.
And we've seen what happens when that bet unwinds:
→ 2008 - correlations went to 1, and "safe" and "risky" fell together. Nowhere to hide.
→ 2020 - every screen turned red in the same week, until the Fed flooded the system.
→ Right now - the same convergence is showing up again. Quietly. Across borders.
When markets fuse like this, individual analysis stops working. You're no longer holding "stocks" and "crypto" and "gold." You're holding one trade - and it only takes one shove to move all of it at once.
Look underneath the surface and the pressure is obvious:
→ Bond yields flashing stress
→ Liquidity tightening in the background
→ A Fed boxed into a corner - ease and reflate the bubble, or tighten and crack an overextended market
Either path leads to the same place. Something breaks.
That's the part people miss. A crash doesn't announce itself with one scary headline. It announces itself when correlation goes to one - when the market stops being a market and becomes a single, fragile thing that all moves together.
That's what just started this week.
Most people will call it "a normal pullback" right up until it isn't. I've spent 10 years watching turning points form, and this is exactly how they look from the inside.
When everything moves as one, the only question left is which way and this week, it picked down.
Don't be the last one still treating it like business as usual.
The gun in that video shot vaccine through the skin at over 200 miles an hour, with no needle. One person could vaccinate up to a thousand people an hour. It was gentle enough to use on a sleeping baby without waking them.
It was called the jet injector. In a lot of countries it got a nickname: the peace gun.
Inside, a piston pushed liquid through a tiny hole at huge pressure, opening a pinprick in the skin and dropping the dose just underneath. An American engineer named Aaron Ismach built a foot-pump version so it could work in villages with no electricity, and he added a special tip that placed the smallpox vaccine in exactly the right layer of skin. Brazil ran one of the first big tests in 1965, which is probably why a Brazilian posted this clip.
Smallpox is the deadliest disease people have ever faced. It killed about 300 million people in the 20th century, and roughly one in three people who caught it died. In 1967, the year of this video, it was still infecting around 15 million people a year and killing two million of them.
The World Health Organization set out to wipe it out, and the jet injector was what made mass vaccination fast enough to win. Teams moved through whole countries, a thousand arms an hour. The last natural case was a hospital cook in Somalia, 1977. By 1980 smallpox was gone for good, the only human disease ever wiped off the planet, and over the years these guns had given out billions of shots against smallpox, measles, polio, and meningitis.
Then the same thing that made it work is what ended it. Firing liquid that hard flicked a thin film of blood back onto the tip, and that tip went straight into the next arm. Hepatitis B spreads on almost nothing, far less than a single drop of blood. At one California clinic in the mid-1980s, 31 people caught hepatitis B from a single shared injector. That was enough. The most common model was pulled from the market in 1997, and the US military, its biggest user, stopped using them on recruits that same year.
A cheap two-pronged needle, dipped and reused, finished the smallpox job the gun had started. The peace gun won the one war it was built for, then quietly retired.
A single gram of antimatter costs about $62.5 trillion to make. That is roughly half of everything the world economy makes in a year, for one gram. Reaching the nearest star would take hundreds of thousands of tons of it.
Antimatter packs more energy per ounce than anything else. A normal rocket barely turns any of its fuel's weight into energy, less than a billionth of it. Nuclear fission, the reaction inside a power plant, releases about 0.1 percent of its fuel as energy. Fusion, the reaction in the sun, reaches 0.7 percent. Matter meeting antimatter converts almost all of it. Per pound, that is about ten billion times the energy in rocket fuel. Nothing else we know of could push a ship to a fraction of the speed of light.
Speed is the whole point. The nearest star sits 4.2 light years away. Voyager 1, the fastest object we have ever launched, would need about 70,000 years to get there. An antimatter ship could make the trip in a few decades. Closer to home, it could reach Pluto in weeks instead of the 9.5 years the New Horizons probe actually took.
The price comes from how antimatter gets made. You cannot mine it. It is built one particle at a time in machines like the collider at CERN in Geneva. Every scrap humanity has ever made adds up to under 20 nanograms, enough to light a 100 watt bulb for a few seconds. At the current rate, a single gram would take about 100 billion years. The universe is 13.8 billion years old.
So the dollar figure is just multiplication. A 2003 NASA design figured that a crewed ship fast enough to reach the nearest star in 40 years would need roughly 815,000 tons of antimatter. At today's price, that bill lands past 50 trillion-times-a-trillion dollars. The number in the tweet is, if anything, on the low side.
The price tag is really a yardstick. It measures the distance between making antimatter one particle at a time, the way we do now, and making it by the ton. The obstacle is closing that distance. The dollar figure is just what that gap costs.
This is real and it has been running for almost 900 years.
It's the Botafumeiro at Santiago de Compostela. 53 kilos of silver-plated brass, heavier once it's packed with burning coal, hung from a 65-meter rope and swung by eight men until it hits 68 km/h and an 82-degree arc that nearly scrapes the transept vault 21 meters up.
The clever part is that they never push it. They yank the rope shorter at the bottom of every swing, then let it back out at the top. Raising and dropping the whole system's center of mass on each pass feeds energy in, the same trick a kid uses standing and crouching on a playground swing. That's parametric resonance, done by hand, inside a building from the 1100s.
The reason it exists is the actual punchline. Medieval pilgrims walked for weeks and slept inside the cathedral with no way to wash, and a normal censer could not cover 1,200 unwashed bodies. So the church built a flying one. The bit about clearing the back pews is closer to the original design spec than anyone tweeting it realizes.
It has broken loose, too. It flew out a cathedral window in 1499, dumped hot coals across the floor in 1937, and cracked a spectator's ribs and nose in the 20th century. The sailor's knots they use now were not an aesthetic choice.

This water has been running for almost 2,000 years, and nobody turns it on. The Romans found a spring up a hill and ran a stone channel down to their city. Then they walked away. The spring never dried up, so the water never stopped. You can find it under an old Roman market in İzmir, Turkey, and the channel is big enough to climb into and walk down.
There is no pump and no machine anywhere in it. The Romans just used gravity. They found water sitting higher than the city, then cut a channel that sloped downhill the whole way, gentle enough that the water kept moving without tearing up the stone or sitting still and going stale. Get the slope right one time, and the water carries itself for good. They got it right.
The same trick is still working over in Rome. The water in the Trevi Fountain, the one tourists toss coins into, is fed by a Roman channel called the Aqua Virgo that was finished in 19 BC. Rome once had eleven of these water lines running into the city. Ten of them eventually broke down and died. That one never did, and it has carried water for more than two thousand years without a break.
Part of why any of this still stands is the concrete. In 2023, MIT scientists broke open a chunk of old Roman concrete to see what made it last. It heals itself. The Romans had mixed in little lumps of lime that earlier scientists wrote off as careless work. When a crack opens and rain gets in, the lime dissolves, then hardens back into fresh stone and seals the gap before it spreads. It is the same concrete in the dome of the Pantheon, which has held up with no steel inside for nineteen centuries.
So that video is really just good math and a spring that outlived everyone who ever knew its name. The empire that built the channel fell more than 1,500 years ago. The water is still moving, the same way it always has, downhill and on its own.
