@HirokoTabuchi I was shocked the first time I saw a 外国人立入禁止 sign in Japan (only in Kanji), but went in anyways. In most cases it was down to staff not knowing English and wanting to avoid conflict, not racism. Starting a dialogue and hearing out the other side makes a big difference.
