It started with dizziness. Then fainting. Then fear.
Maria was finishing high school when her world suddenly began to shrink. Afraid she might collapse again, she stopped going out with friends. What seemed like minor symptoms turned out to be life‑threatening.
Doctors discovered an ultra‑rare cardiac fibroma: a non‑cancerous tumour on her heart causing dangerous arrhythmias. Surgery was her only option, and only a handful of surgeons in the world could perform it.
That’s when Maria was referred to @UHN.
Just days after her 18th birthday, she underwent a rare and complex open‑heart surgery at UHN’s Peter Munk Cardiac Centre, successfully performed by Dr. Robert James (RJ) Cusimano, a global leader in cardiac tumour surgery.
It was a Canadian first – a heart transplant using a heart that had stopped beating. Dr. Seyed Alireza Rabi and the team at @UHN's Peter Munk Cardiac Centre and Ajmera Transplant Centre made history, marking a huge step forward for patients waiting for a second chance at life.
We sat down with Dr. Rabi to chat about how this approach works compared to a traditional heart transplant, and what it could mean for patients in the future.
Donor support makes breakthroughs like this possible, bringing in talented surgeons and innovators like Dr. Rabi to push the boundaries of life-saving care at UHN.
