Why is severance pay taxed like a bonus?

Employees pay income tax throughout their careers.

Then they lose their jobs.

The one payment meant to help them survive, cover EMIs, rent, school fees, groceries, and medical bills is taxed too.

Severance isn't a reward.

It's survival money.

India has millions of private-sector employees but almost no real unemployment safety net.

Should severance pay receive separate tax treatment?

My takeaway from the #TVK government’s first Budget:

No mega flyovers. No big-ticket highways. No flashy landmark projects or cosmetic upgrades. A complete opposite to a traditional #DMK or #AIADMK budget.

Instead, the focus was on governance and services that affect everyday life like schools, hospitals, sports, urban infrastructure, public transport and water supply.

One of the biggest themes caught my eye was procurement reform. The government repeatedly highlighted open and global tenders, promising greater competition, transparency and better value for public money.

Not the most glamorous Budget. But if the tender reforms highlighted by the finance minister is implemented well, it could end up making a bigger difference to people’s lives than a list of mega projects.
