✍️I noticed something remarkable about the massive cloud that went viral after the July 28 Kumamoto (Japan) earthquake.
☁️Leading up to the earthquake, a very similar cloud formation appeared over the same region for three consecutive days. 👇
🛰️ The Himawari satellite time-lapse reveals a consistent daily cycle:
📍 Morning: No significant cloud development. Skies remain mostly clear.
📍 17:00–20:00 Japan Standard Time (JST): A massive cloud suddenly erupts over the exact same location.
📍 Later in the evening: As temperatures fall, the entire cloud mass gradually dissipates.
🗓️This pattern repeats at nearly the same time on July 26, 27 and 28.
So why might this formation have repeatedly developed over the same area?
The most likely explanation is orographic convection. Warm, moisture-rich air from the surrounding seas is forced upward by Kyushu’s mountainous terrain, producing these impressive convective clouds.
A single photograph from the ground can look extraordinary. But from space, you sometimes discover that one image is only a snapshot of a repeating atmospheric cycle. 🛰️
