Tuesday was a black day for India. Friday has seen redemption in measures I could not have imagined.

For the first time in more than 30 years, a bill introduced by the government has failed to pass in the Lok Sabha. I am glad that it is this bill, which was conceived with malicious intent and without any logic, that has been defeated.

Parties that would ordinarily have been convinced of short-term benefits from an increase in seats have upheld oppositon unity to control the dictatorial tendencies of the government.

It is a sign that a politics of principles still exists in India, that there is still hope for a brighter future.

This is the turning point we have been waiting for. When he launched the election campaign, Chief Minister Thiru @mkstalin said “Tamil Nadu shall fight, Tamil Nadu shall win.”

Today, I am grateful to say: Tamil Nadu has fought, Tamil Nadu has won. India has fought, India has won.

The Delimitation Bill is a fundamental attack on India’s federal structure.

In 2023, Parliament passed a Bill ensuring 33 percent reservation for women in Parliament and state assemblies. At that time, Lok Sabha LoP Shri Rahul Gandhi, Rajya Sabha LoP Shri Mallikarjun Kharge, CPP Chairperson Smt Sonia Gandhi ji, and other opposition leaders clearly asked the government to implement it in the 2024 elections.

Why was the 33 percent reservation for women not implemented in the 2024 elections?

We insisted that women’s reservation should be implemented in 2024, but the government introduced a Bill and said it would be implemented only after the Census, and the Census only after delimitation. Now you are saying that delimitation and the Census are not possible before 2029.

👉 The Modi government’s intention is to hijack constitutional protections.

👉 The Modi government knows the mindset of the Indian people, and it is scared of the 2029 elections. It wants an escape route to cover up for 2029. That is why it is bringing an unconstitutional Bill.

I think the Minister should withdraw this Bill.
