🇵🇱 To był raptem mój pierwszy pełny dzień na Międzynarodowej Stacji Kosmicznej, kiedy rozpakowałem polską flagę, którą nosił w kosmosie na swoim skafandrze gen. Mirosław Hermaszewski w 1978 roku. Dzisiaj przypada 48. rocznica startu jego lotu kosmicznego.

Mirosław Hermaszewski był dla mnie symbolem i przyjacielem, który wspierał mnie podczas selekcji. Cieszę się, że zobaczył wybór Polaka w selekcji astronautów ESA. Niestety, nie zobaczył mojego lotu.

Natomiast z dumą zabrałem jego flagę i wykonałem te symboliczne zdjęcia w Cupoli z widokiem na Ziemię dokladnie w 47. rocznicę jego lotu. Dzisiaj, już rok później, ten moment nadal wywołuje u mnie wspomnienie polskiej obecności w kosmosie.

🇬🇧 It was only my first full day aboard the International Space Station when I unpacked the Polish flag that General Mirosław Hermaszewski wore on his spacesuit during his 1978 spaceflight. Today marks the 48th anniversary of the launch of his mission.

Mirosław Hermaszewski was both an inspiration and a friend to me. He supported me throughout the ESA astronaut selection process, and I’m grateful that he lived to see the first Pole selected to the ESA Astronaut Corps. Sadly, he did not live to see my own mission.

I was proud to bring his flag with me into space and to take these symbolic photographs in the Cupola, overlooking Earth, These pictures were taken exactly on the 47th anniversary of his flight. Now, one year later, that moment still brings back powerful memories of Poland’s presence in space.
