The new electronic identity card (e-ID) will look very similar to the current national identity card already in circulation. However, the difference is that it will contain an electronic chip that will be placed within the Namibian Coat of Arms on the front of the card.
The Ministry of Home Affairs, Immigration, Safety, and Security is currently conducting a public awareness campaign across the Omaheke Region ahead of the national rollout of the e-ID system.
Namibia will officially introduce electronic identity cards on 1 September 2026 as part of efforts to modernise the country's identity management system, strengthen security, prevent identity fraud and improve access to government services.
The new e-ID will remain valid for 10 years, after which it will need to be renewed.
