My Dad struggled with mental illness & drugs but was also a deeply beautiful artist who loved people & really got put through the ringer by the world telling him his truths were wrong. Things that can be dangerous in a small town:

Being Black or a person of color
Being LGBTQ
Being a religious minority
Being a (non white) immigrant
Not looking like everyone else
Being different

I know because I grew up in a small town. It's so small it was a dry town that didn't allow sale of alcohol until that was overturned on a referendum in the 2020 election.

There were several times that hate symbols were spray painted on people's cars, on buildings, and on the local high school.

My parents were church goers. There were people at church who would talk to my white stepdad, but not me or my mom.

I now live in one of the most diverse cities in the US, and I love that.

I feel safer.

When I've had to drive through small towns in rural areas, I see Confederate flags, Trump signs, and I don't feel safe. Friends and coworkers have shared similar feelings.

Filming a music video at the site of a lynching, for a song called "Try that in a small town" is an intentional insult and warning to stay out if you don't "fit in".
