Hello @JumiaNigeria please what’s going on with my order? It’s been some days now and the back and forth with delivery is becoming something else. I have tried to reach you guys directly all to no avail.
@HrhKingAlex Absolutely! Critical Thinking, communication, team work are areas children should develop in rather than just concentrating on the academics.
@saint_ola It doesn’t necessarily mean that the western children aren’t learning but their learning is experiential rather than rote and cramming. I believe the western system addresses learning needs according to their age and readiness while focusing on other areas like communication
@saint_ola Critical thinking, collaboration, empathy which is very crucial at a foundation stage. Interesting some schools in Nigeria have ensured that this is also integrated into the system and intentionally train teachers. So it’s not just completing the curriculum but teaching and
@saint_ola The Nigerian curriculum promotes this and has been engraved into the system that parents measure a child’s success by academic excellence. But for countries like Canada, Uk it’s different. They place priority of play based learning at an early age exploring their environment.
@saint_ola We were and are more examination oriented, high academic competitions that made us rely heavily on content rather than procedures. So children are exposed to early literacy, math which bring about memorization, rote learning and that’s what we see in our Nigerian children
@saint_ola Nigeria’s education was largely shaped by the introduction of the British education system so our educational foundation is formed by what was passed down from the colonial period. This was then adapted to our social realities and cultures which changed the structure of learning
@saint_ola It should rather be what does educational system prioritize? This scenario is clearly what we see when children move from one system into another. The philosophy, structure, expectations and outcomes has to be considered. What do I mean?
@saint_ola Hmmm this is very interesting. I am a Nigerian and an educator for about 2 decades exposed to different types of curriculum teaching remotely and in physical school.
This is not a defense to Nigerian curriculum or a criticism to the western system
