Ep. 2 — A Trapped Night (1/2) #WONBIN
Page 1
It was the first time a security guard had ever called out to Wonbin. When Wonbin tried to walk past without paying him any attention, the guard called out again, a little louder this time.
“Hey, you.”
Wonbin turned his head. The guard had his cap pulled down low, and with the night growing late, his face was hidden from view. His gaunt frame and the cigarette in his hand were the only things clearly visible. Wonbin stopped walking and stared at him without answering.
“Why do you keep going there? Let’s meet up.”
The guard gestured toward the place with the hand holding his cigarette. The area was pitch-black, made even darker by the streetlights that had long since gone out. He had been hiding behind the wall and smoking there almost every day, and it seemed he had been watching Wonbin head toward that place all along.
Wonbin was easy to spot because his cigarette glowed like a beacon, but the guard’s ability to find Wonbin in the darkness and to recognize that it was the same person every time was surprisingly impressive. Perhaps it was a skill he had acquired through his nightly patrols. Either way, Wonbin had no reason to explain why he was going there.
The guard was responsible for an old residential complex beyond the wall. The back door of the security booth connected to a small gate in the wall, allowing him to smoke out of sight of the residents. Strictly speaking, however, this place was outside his jurisdiction, so Wonbin had no reason to report his presence to the guard.
Wonbin walked past him without a word.
“Just worried someone might report me for no reason, that’s all.”

Those words made Wonbin turn back.
“...Report you?”
“If I keep showing up at a place where something happened every day, don’t you think people might start getting suspicious? Or what, are you the police officer in charge of the case?”
“I’m still in high school.”
The guard lifted his cap. He had wanted to get a better look at the other person’s face, but it was impossible to make out the features obscured by the darkness.
“Oh, sorry. I guess I made you older than you are.”
The guard apologized, mixing in a casual lie. With nothing more to say, he stubbed out his shortened cigarette against the wall and slipped the butt into his pocket.
“Still, it’s dangerous for a young guy to be alone at night. The world’s a scary place, student. That’s a dangerous spot.”
“I have friends.”
The guard seemed about to say something more, but eventually gave up and turned to leave.
“Anyway, don’t go to the lake. Why keep going to a place where someone drowned...?”
As the guard walked away, Wonbin asked, almost to himself,
“Isn’t there a whale in the lake?”
The guard glanced back at Wonbin, shook his head in disbelief, and walked away.
