ذكّرني بفيلم أمريكي تدور قصته حول صديقين، كان كل واحدٍ منهما يتمنى حياة الآخر، ويرى أن الطرف الثاني يعيش الحياة الأفضل والأكثر راحة.

وبطريقةٍ فنتازية، تبدّلت حياتهما، فأصبح كل واحد يعيش حياة الآخر التي طالما تمنّاها.
في البداية بدا الأمر رائعًا، وكأن أمنياتهما تحققت أخيرًا، لكن مع مرور الوقت بدأت الحقيقة تظهر؛ إذ اكتشف كل واحد منهما أن تلك الحياة التي كان يحسد الآخر عليها لم تكن مناسبة له كما كان يظن.

حينها أدركا أن المقارنات كثيرًا ما تُخفي تفاصيل لا نراها، وأن الإنسان قد يتمنى حياة غيره لأنه لا يعرف ثمنها الحقيقي.
وفي النهاية، فهم كل واحد منهما أن حياته الأصلية، رغم ما فيها من نقص أو تعب، كانت الأنسب له والأقرب لطبيعته

Ugh, the story of my life! I’d LOVE to see a bit chonkier of an Apple, too. Each week that Apple’s weight check-in shows gains is encouraging!

For the longest time, Apple’s appetite just simply wasn’t sufficient. That, and one of the most common symptoms hydrocephalic kits show upon intake is the inability to really pinpoint, target, and execute eating. Apple was one of those kits whose ability to find food was very affected as a 3.5 week old intake.

But to my surprise, this is actually one of the behaviors she has made leaps and bounds with. She eats like a champ now! And it’s actually a HUGE deal, because the ability to eat is, of course, incredibly important and can directly relate to quality of life. The fact that Apple eats almost identically to a “normal” fox is actually one of the most encouraging things about her case.

…Why?

Because it continues to support the idea that maybe, just maybe, the historical standard of euthanizing hydrocephalic Red fox kits isn’t always the most ethical option. Maybe others will start to believe that our mission is right, that maybe these babies truly do deserve a real chance at life, even if that life ultimately ends up being as a non-releasable animal in a captive sanctuary setting. 👏🏼✨

We’re seeing firsthand that some behaviors, skills, and overall mentation CAN improve with time. The reality is that these babies haven’t been given the opportunity to show us what they may be capable of long term, because of the standard euthanasia protocol that has existed.

I’ve never had a hydrocephalic kit survive as long as Apple has; even though I’ve usually chosen “comfort care” over immediate euthanasia, I’ve still never had one stay with me long enough to show the kind of developmental progress that Apple is showing. Now that we have our amazing veterinary neurosurgeon on board, and Apple is thriving under medical management, I feel like I’m watching something I’ve spent over a decade hoping to see. Her continued improvement has been amazing. 🥹

So while this may seem like a small topic, it’s actually huge and super encouraging. But yes, I would still love to see her get a little more plump. Though, she is entering that “lenky pre-teen” age, so VISIBLE weight gain for any fox is tough at this stage, sadly. 😂🍏

I’m still admittedly very naïve to this entire world, but, I’m learning that this space tends to move very fast. I’m genuinely surprised by the lack of attention given to this type of cryptocurrency project.
