Western alienation is decades old.
Why, then, has separatism become so politically salient (if unpopular) now?
One answer is that Alberta separatism has become embedded in a much larger, transnational far-right populist movement.
Brexit. MAGA. The Freedom Convoy. AfD.
When I graduated high school I believed Albertans got a bad deal from Canada. But I grew up. I paid attention over decades and learned the oil companies' and government's propaganda was BS. Both need Albertans to have victim complexes.
@TheRealDKGray “Imagine the amount of propaganda it took to convince millions of people that healthcare, food assistance, social programs, clean water, clean air, good wages, housing, equal rights, diversity and a healthy planet for all people was somehow a threat to (Alberta) & Christianity”
@BeccaPolakSays@ABDanielleSmith Fascism in AB "...centralized authoritarian power...violation of democratic norms such as the UCP’s planned...gerrymandering; scapegoating of...minorities; attacks on...scientific and medical research; and demands to take over and politicize the judiciary."https://t.co/ZpVis8TSWR
A quiet layer of biology is beginning to change how health is understood, and it sits on the surface of nearly every cell in your body. https://t.co/3C3JzhjtdD #biology#health#medicine#science#SciChat
Bit by bit, the substructure of our democracy is being eroded. A delay to annual reports may seem minor, but add it to the list: FOIP dysfunction, gerrymandering and other elxn meddling, interfering with independent officers and cities, withholding and manipulating info... #ableg
@BarbLarochelle Some folks are saying they will donate this to charities. This is admirable but just a bandaid. To actually excise the tumor that is the UCP, perhaps we should all donate our #DaniDoh to opposition parties.
We should be honest about how the American owned O&G industry in Alberta:
Has gutted its workforce;
Co-opted the Alberta gov;
Brainwashed the Separatists w/ O&G talking points;
Underpaid taxes & royalties;
Realized profits in the US;
And left Alberta with hundreds of billions in liabilities, remediation, & known costs...

Let's discuss.
@OilGasCanada@APIenergy
It’s funny how the same homes and chuds who flew a Canadian flag during the convoy, now fly Alberta flags for separation
We were right to call them fucking traitors from the start
@DonBraid Horseshit, Don. You and I both know there’s been seppies in this province since the early 80s. I ran against one in 2019 - before SG was EnviroMin.
We’ve always had these kooks around, they just haven’t been given care and feeding until now. Including by you.
Submitted my income taxes today. Pen and paper as always. Handcrafted with care, and yet charmingly amateurish. Bet they don't see many like that any more. Hope the CRA is suitably impressed.
Alberta separatists might look haphazard but they have a clear path to turn a 20% issue into a real threat.
1 - Normalize separatism so it no longer feels toxic.
2 - Tie it to every grievance.
3 - Find a political dance partner. The U.S.A.
They are now pushing all 3 at once
