Strengthening Rural Credit for Inclusive Growth in India

India's rural credit ecosystem has expanded significantly over the years. It provides timely and affordable finance for agriculture, allied sectors, rural enterprises and households, supporting inclusive rural development. It meets short-term, medium-term and long-term credit requirements for both production and consumption. By supporting income generation, asset creation and household resilience, rural credit has become a key driver of rural development. It is delivered through a network of institutional sources, including Scheduled Commercial Banks, Regional Rural Banks, Cooperative Banks and the National Bank for Agriculture and Rural Development (NABARD), alongside non-institutional sources.

At the centre of this ecosystem is NABARD, the apex development financial institution for agriculture and rural development. It strengthens the rural credit architecture through refinance support, rural infrastructure financing, institutional development and supervision of Cooperative Banks and Regional Rural Banks.

The growing reach of formal rural finance is reflected in NABARD's Rural Economic Conditions and Sentiments Survey (May 2026). About 77.2% of rural households reported higher consumption levels, reflecting rising purchasing power and sustained demand. Access to formal credit has also expanded significantly. Around 51% of households relying exclusively on formal sources and over 27% accessing both institutional and non-institutional channels.

🔹The Ethanol Blended Petrol (EBP) Programme is one of India's key energy initiatives.

🔹It aims at improving energy security, supporting farmers, and reducing environmental impact through greater use of domestically produced renewable fuel.

🔹Despite clarifications, certain concerns have continued to be raised regarding the #EBP Programme. The following Frequently Asked Questions provide factual, evidence-based responses to these concerns.

Q1. Is ethanol a new fuel that India invented or rushed into?

🔹No. Ethanol is not a new fuel. Henry Ford designed the Model T to run on ethanol more than a century ago. Countries like Brazil and the United States have blended ethanol into petrol for decades.

#Cabinet approved the development of a 43.218 km Link/Connector Corridor connecting NH-31 and the Varanasi Ring Road along the River Varuna for decongestion of #Varanasi city in Uttar Pradesh.

The project comprises a 6/4-lane predominantly elevated corridor, including main carriageway, flyovers, loops, ramps and service roads, and will be implemented by the National Highways Authority of India (NHAI) under the Hybrid Annuity Model (HAM) at a total capital cost of Rs.10,998.32 crore, including a civil construction cost of Rs.4,565.33 crore and land acquisition cost of Rs.934.91 crore.

Cabinet approves Mobile Phone Manufacturing Scheme (MPMS) with a budgetary outlay of ₹ 62,500 crore
