The FSB abducted nurse Iryna Danylovych near a bus stop in Koktebel. They drove her to a field near Nasypne, twisted her arms, and took her phone and tablet.

She was then taken to the FSB headquarters in Simferopol with a bag over her head. In the basement, she was beaten, suffocated with a plastic bag, given food only once a day, and forced to sign blank documents.

Later, a court sentenced Iryna to 6 years and 11 months in prison. russia sent her to a penal colony in Mordovia. After the beatings, she lost hearing in one ear.

After 2022, russia began systematically abducting women in occupied Crimea. Human rights defenders had confirmed the names of 32 women by the end of 2025. Twenty-five were taken by the FSB in Crimea. Another seven were brought there from other occupied territories.

In November 2025, Maryna Riff from Hurzuf went to the migration service office in Simferopol to submit her fingerprints and disappeared. She managed to send an SOS message to her family.

Her mother waited outside the gates of the detention center. Maryna shouted, “Mom!” but she was never allowed to come out to her.

Since then, there has been no information about Maryna. Her family and lawyer suspect that she is being held in Simferopol Detention Center No. 2.

In November 2024, the FSB abducted Sakha Mangubi, a Karaite woman. For more than a year, the FSB claimed that it had never detained her. In February 2026, a court in Simferopol formally ordered her detention on charges of “high treason.” In April, she was sent for a forced psychiatric evaluation.

On May 13, 2022, volunteer Iryna Horobtsova was abducted in Kherson. She was transferred to Crimea, where she was held in Detention Center No. 1, Detention Center No. 2, and the FSB’s secret Detention Center No. 8.

For more than two years, she had no contact with her family.

Over a year and a half, an investigator visited her only three times. She lost 20 kilograms. In August 2024, a court sentenced her to 10 and a half years in a penal colony. russia also sent her to Mordovia.

The whereabouts of five abducted women are currently unknown. russia is hiding them in Crimean detention centers that are officially designated as facilities for men.

I hear that Trump’s action in Venezuela “might give ideas” to Xi and Putin. Actually, the dictators in Russia and China will see all this as Trump’s unforced acquiescence to the “multipolar” narrative they have been pushing for decades.

Putin has always been insistent about his “near abroad” as a Russian “sphere of interest”. Before launching his full scale invasion against Ukraine, Putin declared that one of the goals of the “operation” was to revise the framework of European security. The Chinese “nine dash line” and its clashes with Taiwan, Japan and the Philippines are nothing less than a declaration of a sphere of interest or even of control. Trump is not offering a new approach, he is simply legitimising the approach promoted by Russia and China.

Now Putin and Xi no longer need to mask their aggressive imperialist ambitions, they can be openly proud of them without fear of condemnation.

But the most basic weakness in Trump's version of the Monroe Doctrine is this – in the eyes of adversaries it lowers the status of the USA to that of a regional power. If America’s enemies interpret all this as a climbdown – they will feel free to continue pursuing their long-held expansionist goals. Perhaps faster and with less caution.

And so, the “one hemisphere” plan does not secure US interests. On the contrary – it allows them to be threatened. If you destroy 50 percent of your castle walls you reduce your security by 100 percent.
