I use this exact example to illustrate how esports is a sport but chess is a competitive game.

Unless you are playing bullet chess, the game of chess has no mechanical skills.

It doesn't matter how fast or precisely you move the pieces on the board.

You can play the game entirely without hands with nothing but voice commands and still demonstrate the highest expression of chess strategy.

Esports titles inherently have mechanical skill expression.

Particularly of the fine motor variety

Using game-specific peripherals to perform X/Y axis manipulation and key presses.

sport - noun

An activity involving physical exertion and skill in which an individual or team competes against another or others for entertainment. "team sports such as baseball and soccer"

We know esports involve physical exertion due to the esport specific injuries we see as a result and I've just covered mechanical skill expression. So there's no reason to not classify them with all the same terminology as traditional sports.

Anecdotally as well I don't know anybody that plays beer league softball that would call themselves an athlete but that doesn't diminish softball's classification.
