The point isn't the fee. Focusing on whether Jeremy Vine was doing it “for free” is a convenient distraction, one that lets the media avoid confronting the real harm. The anger from unpaid carers and disabled people was rooted in something far more serious: the show bearing his name has, for years, framed people on disability benefits as liars, scroungers, burdens, and drains on society, and it has repeatedly allowed misinformation to go unchallenged.

That is the core issue. And it’s one the media still refuses to grapple with.

He’s still complaining about the “pile on.”

It’s self-inflicted.

Instead of listening to disabled people, he’s made it all about himself. He’s combative, snarky and defensive. The poor victim.

Who stokes the abuse that disabled people get everyday.

He’s extended this “pile on” with his behaviour. People aren’t feeling heard. He shoves it back in their faces. He’s stoking the anger and he knows it.

The way he’s reacting makes me think disabled people have hit a nerve. The truth hurts.

All he’s doing now is trying to protect his career.

The media really hasn’t learned a thing from the Jeremy Vine episode, and their latest circling of the wagons proves it. They’re still tone deaf to why unpaid carers and disabled people were upset in the first place.

They keep framing it as “online outrage” or a “backlash,” instead of acknowledging the real issue: Vine’s programme has repeatedly platformed harmful narratives about disability benefits and carers. People weren’t angry for sport, they were responding to years of being misrepresented, dismissed, and treated as debate fodder.

And even after Vine stepped down, the coverage centred his feelings, his impartiality, his sadness. Carers’ concerns were treated like a footnote.

This is exactly the problem. The media reports the event, but refuses to report the reason. It hears noise, not meaning. It still doesn’t understand, or doesn’t want to understand, the harm its narratives cause.

Unpaid carers and disabled people deserve better than this. They deserve to be listened to, not caricatured.
