So today, I presented on Rome at infectious disease congress, my PhD student is presenting in Sheffield @YRM_2025 and all appears to have been a grand success. No idea how she's celebrating but my hotel has a pool...
Our PhD student joined faculty 3 minute thesis competition yesterday and I've had good feedback - unfortunately work meant I was 50 miles north at the time so had to miss out. A great dry run before she presents at the @YRM_2025 in Sheffield on the 10th of June! #polymers
Now Dr Tom Swift discusses issues in healthcare markets regarding infectious diseases, and introduces Molecular Titans - an initiative to develop new materials that bring with them new solutions - at the @Bionow Yorkshire Partnering Event.
It's official then! Students were told over a week ago, us a month ago - now the newspapers have picked up on the story. There will be no Chemistry intake at Bradford this September. Am gutted the team has not been able to secure ongoing support.

#newmanuscript Delighted that our analysis of the kinds of steps needed to overcome challenges examining high molar mass polymers using DOSY NMR techniques has been accepted and is available online. Anyone interested can find the early copies here:

Excellent news to end a rather harrowing week - my 48th scientific manuscript has just been accepted in Journal of Surfactants and Detergents!
Quite a side step compared to what I normally do - heavy on Tim of Flight Secondary Ion Mass Spectroscopy to study biological samples!
Spent the day at the Central Laser Facility @CLF_STFC in the Rutherford Appleton Laboratory @RutherfordApLab .... An amazing home for UK science. They needed to speak to a material chemist 🧪 ⚗️. This is a mural inside the building. @UoBChem
Our latest research article, studying the desolvation of different branched PNIPAMs targeting Gram-Positive bacteria, is fully formatted, open access and available now on the RSC website. You can read it yourself by visiting https://t.co/cORmvnJWRo
Delighted to end the week with news that our new #acceptedmanuscript on using Branched Polymyers desolvating when exposed to targeted bacteria to trigger fluorescence signals is available! An important step towards viable rapid infection diagnostics:

Sci Mix is drawing to a close, an.i've had a great 2 hours talking about flipped learning across Chemistry curriculums, an sharing the apprentice programmes run by @UoBChem. Now just need to write it up into that paper #ACSFall2024
#ACSFall2024 talk 2 from @polybiomat is at 4.20 pm in Sheraton Tower Court B. Fouling and non fouling Polymer surfaces- come see our work on advanced materials if your attending!
Less than 4 hours till my first @POLY_ACS oral presentation on SCVP branching to enhance Polymer architecture. Just arrived in Denver and excited for a great conference!
This image was prepared for a presentation at the @AmerChemSociety meeting next week. It's a snapshot building from some work published last year as part of a special issue in @Gels_MDPI - RAFT chain extendable crosslinked hydrogels. Available here: https://t.co/69ZAQt9QOJ
One really interesting aspect of controlled polymerisation - is that 'functionally' you are dealing with the chemistry of less than 0.1% of the molecule. Yet - subtle incorporation of a chain transfer agent can change everything... #polymerchem
What a beast!
Spent the day talking to team from Waters/Wyatt about setting this instrument up. Full training begins Wednesday morning!
Excited to knuckle down into new capabilities for Polymer and Particle Analysis at @UoBChem
I spent a lot of #macro2024 talking to colleagues about a new accepted manuscript re Polymer analysis. Delighted to say @PolymChem have published our work on high resolution DOSY analysis of PEtOx from @Hoogenboomgroup https://t.co/irsZs2HAXe
Finally, @Swifthom will be presenting neither of these papers but other recent work incorporating functional polymer additives into biomaterials, tomorrow at 16:30 - 16:45, OC002. 3 case studies in stimuli functional polymers and biomaterials covering 7 years of @UoBChem work
Swift group is at @IUPACPolymer#MACRO2024 and has just published 2 brand new papers on macromolecular analysis in @RoySocChem journals. The first, @rsc_medchem is on using DOSY to study drug - protein binding efficiencies. Fast, analytical methods shown: https://t.co/GU80s9nYuM
The 2nd, isn't online yet, but a brand new 'just accepted' @PolymChem article is summarised at #MACRO2024 poster number 292! Come visit 1st author Bryn Monnery to talk DOSY at the poster session 6 pm tonight for a sneak preview! Thanks to @Hoogenboomgroup for great collaboration
Mulling over some potential 'topics' for my next substack blog. So far I've written about diseased Contact Lenses and the materials science of Period Products. Cutting and opinionated Materials Science analysis from the lab - available here: https://t.co/2act1swGOA
