The elephant in the room here is religion - really Christianity - without which the middle ages simply makes no sense. It underpinned its lifeworld and gave a set of otherwise arbitrary set of cultural and societal traits coherence. You cannot really dispense with it.

The main reason why this is controversial has nothing to do with politics per se. If the islamic standard narrative was subject to the level of historiographic and source critical standards which biblical and early church narratives were, a lot of academics would lose their jobs.

Was mich am meisten mitgenommen hat, war das öffentliche Schauspiel, daß das alles normal sein soll. Diese Verwahrlosung ist nicht normal, diese Infrastruktur ist nicht normal, halbnackte Aggressive sind nicht normal. Ein anderes Miteinander ist möglich.
