I can’t think of anything I’d rather do less than swim in an outdoor pond.

But here’s why I care deeply about what’s happening at Hampstead Heath.

It’s a simple, relatable - and very visual - example of how the public, politicians and the media have been encouraged to feel sympathy for people with questionable motives.

Because there are three public ponds.

A men’s pond.
A women’s pond.
And a mixed pond, open to everyone.

The mixed pond dates back to the 1860s; the men’s to 1894; and the women’s to 1925, after women fought for a space of their own.

So as things stand, it’s hard to imagine a more ‘inclusive’ setup. Yet we’re repeatedly told this arrangement is somehow not inclusive.

And what’s being demanded here is not access to swimming - or “inclusive” arrangements for trans people. Those already exist.

It’s access to the women’s pond - a space where women are partially or fully naked - with the sole criterion for entry being self-identification as female.

Access for men who already have two places to swim, regardless of how they ‘identify’ - and who *know* women don’t want them there.

Just think about that for a moment.
