Nuke isn't a solution for all obstacles, but its the solid base we build our grid from. I still think there is plenty of room for combustion engines, especially diesel. With diesel it is easier to modify it to run on multiple fuels, like corn biofuels. Then excess grain could be sold in the energy market.
Hydrogen fuel cells for cars still needs to be explored, too. I like the idea of hybrid over strict electric, but there are use cases for any of these combinations.
