Kiran Mazumdar-Shaw, Founder and Chairperson of Biocon Limited, in her Hindustan Times article, shares how the Department of Biotechnology (DBT) and the Biotechnology Industry Research Assistance Council (BIRAC) are empowering women entrepreneurs and scientists, shaping India’s future in science, technology, and biotech innovation.
She highlights that women are not just participants in India’s development, they are its true drivers. From scientists at the Indian Space Research Organisation (ISRO) leading Chandrayaan-2 and Mars Orbiter Mission, to the 10 lakh Asha workers supporting primary healthcare, and women entrepreneurs pioneering affordable diagnostics, genomics, and vaccine innovations, women are actively shaping breakthroughs across labs, clinics, farms, and startups.
Government programmes such as BioCARe and WISE-KIRAN have enabled women scientists returning from career breaks to resume innovation, while BIRAC has supported over 300 women led enterprises in biotech sector, reflecting a new generation of leaders. Dr. Shaw underscores that when women are given opportunity and recognition, their impact is transformative—advancing genomics, molecular diagnostics, biologics, precision therapies, and grassroots health delivery.
