I am astonished at the vitriol being directed towards the boomers. My gosh, these are your parents, aunts, uncles, and grandparents. They didn’t implement Social Security, that would be the silent generation. You all are calling them selfish even though they paid into it their entire career. I would say those of you bashing on them are the selfish ones!
Do I have this about right?
Boomers are awful people because they worked for 50+ years, paying into SS, a system they were forced to participate in, and now they expect to <gasp> actually receive SS payments when they retire?
I know many boomers who worked in a factory or as waitresses all their lives barely getting by. It’s their fault they didn’t have a better opportunity? Some people just don’t get those better opportunities but yet you want to take their only source of income. You sound like an out of touch elitist!
They are creating a wedge issue between generations. I hope people see through this. They are going to end up ginning up enough anger to cause riots like what is going on in France right now. Then in a few years when social security doesn't bring in enough and recipients are cut 20% the politicians will be like - sorry our hands are tied.
Social Security was enacted under leadership of the Silent Generation. Boomers had no choice but to pay in to it their entire working career, much like the younger generations are. We should be able to find solutions to fix this without cutting it for those currently on it. That would be the federal government breaking its contract with the American people and if that happens Katie bar the door!
@The_JBS How about those elderly people in which this their only or main income? Or those that will be drawing it within the next 5 years and have paid in to it for 30 + years? We just let them starve?
You Boomers better keep your head down as the government is creating a wedge between you and younger generations as a diversion to avoid fixing social security. Some of the comments I am reading regarding that Cato Institute poll are pretty ugly.
@RyanMNeuhaus Is this the generation that paid for and helped the next generation(their children) with their college education? Are your parents Boomers? I guess they are selfish.
For those who say that "boomers had it easy".....
When i got married and bought a house in 1988 it seems minimum wage was about 7 grand (base pay no OT). My home cost me 132k. Or about 19 times minimum wage pay
Average salary was 19k. (my house was 7 years salary) With a degree starting pay was around 26k. (my house was about 5 years salary)
We didn't get "parental leave". Or "family sick leave" or free medical (obama care ) or many of the benefits given today. There's a cost to all of those things. They don't get funded from thin air. All of that adds to your compensation package
Today my home is worth 4-5 times what i paid 38 years ago
Min wage in NY state is 17 an hour or 5 times what it was in 88
Average salary in NY about 103k more than 5 times what it was in 88
So house is 5 times what it was in 88. Min wage is 5 times what it was in 88. Average wage 5 times what it was in 88
Yes times are tough. But in 88 times were tough too!
I worked two full time jobs for years. At one stretch went 730 days with not a single day off from both jobs. No sick days. No vacation days. No holidays. Even worked when my daughter was born and went back to work after she was born later that day.
I don't resent people getting time with their families but we didn't get that 40 years ago. We never had it "easy"
Times were tough for boomers too
News flash. TIMES ARE ALWAYS TOUGH!
Go ahead. Bring on the hate now.
They are just trying to pit the elderly against the younger generations instead of where it belongs- The wealthy against the lower and middle classes. Let's shine the light there. Any income earned over 184,500 does not pay in social security. Get rid of that cap and it will extend the solvency of social security by about another 30 years.
For years politicians have been pitting one group against the other. Funny how they don’t pit the wealthiest 10% against the rest of us yet they will pit the elderly (boomers) against the younger generation. The latest is a poll on social security. Let me remind everyone that millions of “boomers” are lower income and need every penny of their social security at that is the only income they have. They maybe worked in factories or as a waitress this entire lives and never did get a good break in life that allowed them to work at a job with a pension. There is definitely a small percentage of boomers that are very wealthy but please don’t just throw out the baby with the bath water.
