โI hope this reflects on the really courageous people who joined me in the beginning of this project when no respectable conservative physicists would have joined me, but many talented people did, and thatโs why Iโm here.โ
- Speaking at today's prize announcement, Francis Halzen says the most rewarding part of being awarded the 2026 #NobelPrize in Physics is recognising the people who have worked alongside him.
Cosmic neutrinos with extremely high energies are very rare, so an enormous volume of ice is needed to observe an adequate number of collisions. The IceCube Neutrino Observatory covers an entire cubic kilometre and was finished in 2011. Researchers soon discovered the first high-energy neutrinos and, a few years later, could publish their discovery of neutrinos that must originate far outside our solar system. The search for the universeโs neutrino sources could begin in earnest.
Francis Halzen has received the 2026 #NobelPrize in Physics for his decisive contributions to the IceCube Neutrino Observatory and the discovery of high-energy neutrinos of astrophysical origin.
The news of a suspected "plague" outbreak from Russia should be treated with the utmost seriousness, especially considering the source. COVID showed us how the lies and obstruction of authoritarian governments seeking to cover their tracks can turn a containable outbreak into a global pandemic.

Today, three scientists were awarded the Nobel Prize in Physiology or Medicine for their pioneering work on optogenetics, which lets researchers control and manipulate cells using light. It all started with a curious question about the biology of algae. ๐งต
โThere is a big picture that brings it all into relief and my hope is that we can increase empathy and understanding,โ says 2026 medicine laureate Karl Deisseroth.
As a medical student, Deisseroth completed part of his training at a psychiatric clinic. He was struck by the patientsโ suffering and their need for help. At the same time, he began to wonder how the brain could function so differently from one person to another.
Deisseroth was awarded this year's medicine prize, together with Peter Hegemann and Georg Nagel, for discoveries leading to optogenetics โ a biological technique making it possible to switch the activity of individual nerve cells in a living brain on or off.
Optogenetics is now helping us understand more about how nerve cells shape memories, emotions and behaviour in the living brain.

I actually saw it myself this evening while I was out for my evening walk in Tura. I even tried to capture the moment, but I forgot to hit the record button. I just thought it wasnโt that important at the time.
