"Effortlessly at height hangs his still eye.
His wings hold all creation in a weightless quiet,
Steady as a hallucination in the streaming air."
Ted Hughes
Whilst actually describing a hawk, Hughes' description of a hovering bird of prey applies equally to the kestrel, hovering motionless even in high wind, eyeing the ground below for small prey. When I recently featured another of my pictures of a kestrel, I pretty much exhausted its folklore, of which, specifically, there seems to be rather little! More is to be inferred rather than evidenced by its country names, the most well known being "Windhover", ultra-descriptive of its talent. Windfanner and Hoverhawk, are also regionally used names.
"Coystril" variously spelled, was the Old English name for kestrel. It was also a term used to describe a knave, or Jack-the-lad, and put by Shakespeare into the mouth of Sir Toby Belch: "He's a coward and a coistrel that will not drink to my niece!"
If you know any specific folklore about the kestrel, I would love to hear it!

Right above the cheeky chipmunk is the Galah, the beautiful pink comedian of many Australian acecdotes, and one of my greatest joys to watch during my teaching tours of Australia.
Oolah, the Thorney Devil lizard, was one day playing with his boomerang when he accidentally clipped off the crest from a passing Galah. The Galah was furious. "Look what you have done to my beautiful feathers," she cried, flying into a great rage, and chasing Oolah into a spiny, prickly bindii bush. Flapping her wings, she created a great wind that rolled poor Oolah over and over in the sharp seeds of the plant, which stuck all over him, drawing blood in places. When he crawled out she laughed (galahs laugh a great deal). "Now, you will forever be covered in thorns, with great tawny red patchs on your skin!" she cackled. "And you," replied poor Oolah, who had not mean to hurt her, will awlays have a bald spot."
And ever since the Dream TIme, the Thorny Devil has been ... thorny. While, if you look under the crest of a Galah, you will find a bald spot. Or so it is said ...
