The Grizzlies traded Santi Aldama โ the final piece of Grz Nxt Gen. I wrote some quick thoughts on the asset plays from this trade, specifically with the collection and further utilization of the draft capital and with their existing exceptions
๐๐
Dallas acquires a versatile forward as Memphis continues to stack draft capital. The deal also allows the Grizzlies to preserve its full $29 million trade exception from the Jaren Jackson Jr. trade, which otherwise would have been reduced by their earlier offseason dealings.
Cason Wallace/Ty Jerome
Cedric Coward/Jaylen Wells
Jerami Grant/GG Jackson
Cameron Boozer/OMax Prosper
Zach Edey/Isaiah Stewart
Reserves: Pippen Jr./Spencer/Lopez

Size โข Length โข Athleticism โข Physicality
The Memphis frontcourt has reached unprecedented depth in franchise history. The roster currently features more than 10+ players measuring 6โ7โ or taller with plus wingspans, including Edey, Stewart, Boozer, Hendricks, Grant, Lopez, Murray, Wells, GG Jackson, OMax Prosper, Cooper, and others. In addition, each of these players play with a physicality that Santi just hasnโt shown in his Grizzlies stint.
Santiโs Scoring
Young core catching up
Aldama posted a career-high 14.0 points per game last season (18.1 points per 36 minutes). However, several of his positional peers posted stronger per-36 scoring in 2026:
โข Cedric Coward โ 19.0 points per 36โจโข Zach Edey โ 19.0 points per 36โจโข GG Jackson โ 21.0 points per 36โจโข Jerami Grant โ 22.5 points per 36โจโข Taylor Hendricks โ 16.8 points per 36 (while averaging 3 stocks per 36)
The Grizzlies also added two frontcourt players in the first round of the 2026 NBA Draft.
Aldama was outperformed in key areas by the emerging talent around him.
Roster crunch
Trade is on the way
Roster construction adds further context. The team currently sits at 18 players under contract (excluding three two-way deals) and must trim to the standard 15-man limit. They remain below the salary cap floor and will need to reach it through a Jaylen Wells extension, free-agent additions, or a trade.
Given the excess roster spots, a trade is the most practical solution to both consolidate the roster and address cap requirements.
This move would mark a clear shift in how the Grizzlies are allocating minutes and resources to their developing frontcourt.
What are your thoughts on the potential trade of Santi Aldama?
Thereโs so many players on this roster right now. I can confidently say some of these players have a high chance of not being on the roster come October:
Walter Clayton Jr
Scottie Pippen Jr
Ryan Rupert
Taj Gibson
Santi Aldama
KCP
Jahmi Mashack
Taylor Hendricks
Who stays?
Whether Ja Morant stays in Memphis or not Iโll always root for him. Heโs the first player in a Grizz jersey to have his own shoe means something as a 28 year old born and raised in Memphis. He put the city on the map despite his mistakes which we all make. 12 forever good with me
Ja is gone.
Bane is gone.
Melton is gone.
Tillman is gone.
Konchar is gone.
Tyus Jones is gone.
Dillon Brooks is gone.
Taylor Jenkins is gone.
Kyle Anderson is gone.
Ziaire Williams is gone.
Steven Adams is gone.
Jaren Jackson Jr. is gone.
What happened to the Grizzlies ???
Iโve been team GG before day 1 like I am team Lopez before day 1 but truth is Grizzlies wings arenโt good enough to compete yet no matter who starts at the 3 right away. Bring in 1 preferably 2 wings thatโs proven starters and competing could become a discussion until then itโs just happy to be here like itโs been the past 8 seasons
