Today in 1911: The Triangle Shirtwaist Factory fire kills 146 workers due to unsafe working conditions—the majority were immigrant girls and women in their teens and 20s.

This shirtwaist by Fisk, Clark & Flagg was produced around the same time as the fire.

Engine Seven, Ladder One was one of the first fire-and-rescue units to arrive at the World Trade Center on September 11, 2001.
The unit was led by Battalion Chief Pfeifer, who wore this bunker coat.

This apron is covered with patches from relief agencies that worked at the World Trade Center site in 2001. Antonio Vendome turned his family restaurant into a relief center, serving free meals to first responders and relief workers. Workers left their patches as tokens of thanks

9/11/2001, 10:03 a.m.: United Flight 93 crashed in an open field near Shanksville, Pennsylvania. Lorraine Bay was among the seven crew members and 33 passengers killed when it crashed. One of United's most experienced flight attendants, she recorded her flights in this book.

On Sept. 11, 2001, Daria "Chip" Gaillard wrote this note to her husband Franklin and left it on their car in the parking lot of the Pentagon, where they both worked. He found the note. After they reunited, the Gaillards helped move children at the Pentagon daycare to safety.
