La oposición a la subrogación no es homofobia. Es rechazo a que el cuerpo de una mujer (casi siempre pobre) se convierta en medio de producción de un niño que se compra. Que el comprador sea gay no cambia la relación de explotación.

I am bewildered, and not very impressed, by the visceral, naked, irrational hatred spat out by some defenders of Jason Arday. If a Cambridge professor is accused of being an unqualified charlatan, the accusation might be racially motivated. On the other hand it might not, depending on the evidence. The correct question to ask is not, ”What is the colour of his skin” but “Is it in fact true that he is an unqualified charlatan?” Please examine the evidence before leaping to the assumption of racism.
As for the idea that journalists “piled in on him” and “hounded him to his death”, most attacks were against Cambridge University. Jason himself was widely regarded as an unfortunate victim of foolish promotion way beyond his ability to cope. In appointing him to a professorship for which he was manifestly unqualified – in ludicrously describing him as “the best in the world” – certain senior members of the university showed a level of patronising condescension towards black people that could fairly be described as racism, while at the same time making him tragically vulnerable to such attacks as came his way.

Que seas gay, casado y quieras ser padre no cambia absolutamente nada. Tu deseo de tener un hijo no crea un derecho sobre el cuerpo reproductivo de una mujer, ni un derecho a que un niño sea concebido bajo un contrato que organiza su entrega después del nacimiento.

Y esto no tiene nada que ver con que la gestación subrogada “no me guste”. Esa reducción es demasiado cómoda.

¿Me preguntas si fui explotada? Fui concebida dentro de un sistema que decidió, antes incluso de que yo existiera, que la mujer que me llevaría durante nueve meses y me daría a luz tendría que entregarme a otras personas. Hubo intermediarios, dinero y un contrato. Yo era el resultado esperado de esa transacción.

Puedes llamarlo como quieras. Yo tengo derecho a cuestionarlo.

Y precisamente porque quieres recurrir a la gestación subrogada, deberías ser capaz de responder a esos argumentos sin convertir tu deseo de ser padre en el argumento definitivo.

While I endorse most of the message put forward by my fellow mandate holders, I did not join the statement because it describes the situation of women and girls as “gender apartheid” and calls for the codification of this concept.

As I have mentioned before, it is my assessment that the current horrific treatment of women and girls in #Afghanistan amounts to “femi-genocide”: the acts to which they are subjected are intended to destroy Afghan women and girls, who qualify as a national group, in whole or in part because they are female (i.e. biologically female). Females in Afghanistan cannot identify themselves out of these experiences of subjugation and violence, nor can it be denied that Afghan society as a whole associates being female with this level of oppression, marginalization and exclusion.
I am also of the view that the problem is not so much the need to coin new concepts or recognize “new” crimes, but rather the need to apply the legal frameworks and concepts we already have. For example, the crimes of genocide, gender persecution and crimes against humanity are already recognized. All States have a duty to prevent discrimination and violence against all women and girls, and not only against their own nationals. This duty extends to Afghan women and girls as well.

The apathy and normalization of violence experienced by Afghan women and girls is a reflection of the regression in the respect for the rights of women and girls worldwide and their erasure of women and girls as humans that have specific needs and experiences and that are entitled to specific protections based on their sex (intersecting with other grounds)

I close by saying that I of course fully respect the right of others, particularly Afghan women to disagree with my assessment and positions.

Societies cannot on one hand accept that “wombs can be rented” like some standalone “service” delinked from the mother’s body and motherhood; and accept that children can be commissioned and bought, and on the other hand be outraged by stories like these. The horrific but totally preventable situation of this child, is but a consequential, logical and perfectly expected outcome of normalizing and legalizing #surrogacy.

And this is just the tip of the iceberg.

This story is part of just the handful of horror stories that we become aware of as most go unnoticed. We will never know the true scale of exploitation and suffering in surrogacy arrangements.

This is why surrogacy must be abolished in all its forms and we must undercut demand that keeps this harmful industry alive by criminalizing the commissioning of children through surrogacy.

This whole stunt, where people were called up on social media and aren't even refugees, since most just went back, feels like an attempt to destabilise Europe. Let's see if we find out more...
