So the expedition party is the TWELFTH one? The second and third died violently as well. Why do the researchers keep returning to Area X if it so clearly hostile to human life? #ENGL551
There was something about this scene that struck me in particular. It drives home the message of the soaring need for materials now that industrialization has sped up the process of manufacturing to absurdly fast rates. #engl551
Hanning shows one of the things that many people are willing to do when they can’t find safety. They’re willing to give up so much just to “shop in peace” as the guard said. I mean say what you will about product retention assistants but this is way beyond that #engl551
I’m very interested in the survivalism complex that comes with disasters. The “rules” of looting are already hard to define, where do you all draw the line for scavenging for survival and looting? #engl551
I’ve noticed throughout the novel that our expectations seem to keep getting undercut. First there was Keith, then Lauren’s dad, then the community as a whole. Do you as a reader like the undercutting/subversive nature of Butlers writing so far? #engl551
@lexi_raikes I think that the Sphinx is a symbol of a riddle, showing that the Time Traveler is never quite as in control as he'd like to be. This Sphix seems to be blocking his path in the same way as the Sphinx in the Oedipus myth. #ENGL551
Also we cannot just ignore the clear racial undertones in the descriptions of the Elois and Morlocks. It is clear that the Elois are supposed to be represented as a white supremacist race that is founded on the labor of those they see as lower than them. #ENGL551
Wells does a good job of depicting a class divide with the Elois and Morlocks. The working class Morlocks are doing all the hard work out of sight of the upper class Elois who enjoy the fruits of exploited labor. #ENGL551
Ah yes, the casual veiled racism of the Eloi "savages" giving him gifts upon his arrival. This reminds me so much of Hawaiian leis and the meaning behind them. Also a fun fact: this book was published about 65 years before Hawai'i became a state. #engl551
@NoahHazzze @AllisonLaRoy551 This is true! It seems that over the years the collective idea of an apocalypse seems inherently man-made (nuclear winter, resource exploitation, climate change.) But for the longest time in human history, the end of days was perceived to either be a natural or supernatural event
I'm honestly really surprised that everyone was so slow to believe the time traveler at first. I think a part of that definitely has to do with the ~100 year gap from being written. Would you believe the time traveler after what you saw in chapter 1? #ENGL551
