We had 15 nights during grain fill stay above 70 degrees. Rule of thumb has been 1% loss per night. If you had 300 bu to lose at tassel, the overnight temps brought you to 255 by itself.

Early planting and/or early CRM genetics yield gap in you operation??

Seeing early CRM and early plant dates yield levels lower than full season and May 5-15th plant dates. Couple graphs to help explain part of the reason.

Early CRM/plant dates experienced more warm nights and more days of low solar radiation during longer periods of grain fill. This stress alone can take yield.... but also amplified the stress from Southern Rust..

Full season CRM & later plant dates had more sunshine & cooler weather during a longer duration of grain fill.

First soybean plot in the area I cover harvested yesterday near Rowley, IA.

Strong soybean yields in this plot similar to what early harvest reports are. Many field average reports in the mid 70's to low 80's.

Plot was planted April 14th. Seeing again that when early maturity soybeans are planted early, they can keep up in yield to fuller season varieties. By late April/early May fuller season soybeans will typically have a yield advantage.

@KornKattle 100% operator error. Bad ground rig operator runs down crop. Bad aerial operator has stripes. Narrow up swath and slow down speed ft/second will fix that.

Pioneer Rep Pro Farmer yield estimate summary will be coming out later this week. There is more variability from field to field than appears from the road.

With numerous 70-90 mph wind events, heavy rainfall, warm overnight temps, low solar radiation and what may turn into the worst Southern Rust infestation in my career, there has been A LOT of challenges.

Check out your fields when the weather cools off later this week to keep expectations in check!

This graph (daily highs and lows in July) paired with the next 10 day forecast, doesn’t give me warm fuzzies. While we’ve had ample moisture to help decrease stress, this many nights that warm during pollination and grain fill…. 🫤

Fungicide decision time.

I have struggled for the past 15 years scouting for disease at VT and making an accurate prediction of ROI for fungicide applications. It's nearly impossible.

The issue is the "latent" period of corn disease. That is the time the infection takes place & when you see the 1st lesions. Often is two weeks or more. So scouting on day 12 after a spore shower you see nothing... come back 5-7 days later and it looks completely different. Get an application lined up the disease has been working for over 3 weeks.
Attached are pics from a plot were at VT no disease was visible. You can see what the treated vs untreated looked like towards end of season. Resulted in 12 bu/ac yield difference.

Below are situations I would highly recommend treating!!

Also some models are out there to aid if you are not going to treat all acres.

Next up to bat: corn rootworm.
Rootworm development and hatch is driven by soil GDD base52 degrees, with expected 50% hatch between 684 and 676 GDD. Here we are on June 4th, Nashua showing 490 so we have some time before the big meal
