Respect
I don't think people fully understand the magnitude of this decision.
Some of the music industry's most respected producers, writers, engineers, and creatives worked on ARIRANG. A project built to the highest artistic standard. One producer even spoke publicly about hoping the album would receive Grammy recognition.
Then the Recording Academy introduced a category specifically for Asian pop.
And BTS chose not to submit.
Think about that. The biggest musical project of the year. One of the strongest commercial and artistic contenders. A project that could have competed across multiple major categories. It simply won't be in the race because the artists chose principle over prestige.
Moves like this don't happen often. When artists at BTS' level willingly walk away from the biggest stage in music, the conversation shifts because of what they refused to endorse.
And suddenly the βfirst kpop song/artist to win in a kpop category Grammy awardβ bears little to no weight anymore.
Thatβs how powerful BTSβs statement is.
itβs so genius of them if you think about it. whoever wins that category will forever have to live with knowing that they only won it because bts didnβt submit. itβll be an asterisk on the wikipedia page. the grammys viewership will tank. bts put out an album that smashed records everywhere. bts get to exist with their heads held high, as always, and donβt have to kowtow to a shitty system
itβs a win for us. any group that does submit for a category that was created to segregate Asian artists will go down in history as spineless and desperate. BTS have integrity, self-respect, and strength in genuine supportβ the most admirable award there is.

and no matter how much people like to pretend it was for representation, grammys introduced their little asian category to keep them away from the main one so they can keep rewarding their american artists freely. I am glad the boys are stepping away from the racist shitshow
the fact arirang was so much bigger than any of their albums still they decided to not submit it to the grammys bc they cant allow someone to limit their music to a category
this clearly shows how bts see music as an art rather than as something that just sells
BTS spent years opening doors that werenβt built for them. now they have the freedom to decide which ones are worth walking through. bts are truly living legends.
paving the way doesnt always mean the first to win an award, it means the one who makes impact where it matters and allows for those who follow in their footsteps to be seen and treated fairly too. that is what bts are doing, and that takes courage
