Note how the planks are shaped in the traditional way. They are steamed for hours and then quickly shaped while they are still warm using weights and levers. Babu Sankaran does this purely by eye without any measures. Even a small error means that the whole effort is wasted. 2/2

Did a review of the stitched ship project. Babu Sankaran, our master shipbuilder, showed me how the frame is retrofitted into the hull (completely different from the modern system of building a hull on a frame). Also discussed how to go about training of crew with Capt Dilip Dhonde. 1/2

Checked out the stitched ship on the last trip to Goa.

It’s a fantastic project, with literally every corner made of a stuff from an era when “boats were made of wood and men were made of steel”.

Melted resin dipped in sardine oil for sealing, coir for caulking and Manila for standing and running rig, a single section mast standing 13 metres high made of wild jack wood, nearly 98 ounce cotton for sails, wooden blocks. All put together she will be nearly 50 tons at 19 metres, drawing nearly 2 metres.

Imagine 20 Malayali boatbuilders putting their ancient skills to use, at a point so close to where Kunjali Marakkar was executed by the Portuguese.

It was a pleasure to interact with Hodi shipyard and the maistry.

My only crib- Prathmesh needs to learn that wild jack is not Anjali but Aanjili. 😀

Would so love to test her out when she is in water and fitted out. @sanjeevsanyal
