Dear Members of the International Olympic Committee,
I am writing to express my profound disappointment and strong protest regarding the opening ceremonies of the recent Olympic Games. As a devout Catholic and an ardent supporter of the Olympics, I was appalled by the egregious and blasphemous characterizations of Jesus Christ and the unmistakable mockery of the iconic Last Supper depicted during the event.
The portrayal of such sacred and revered religious symbols in a manner that can only be described as disrespectful and sacrilegious is utterly unacceptable. The obvious allusions and the context in which they were presented constitute a direct affront not only to me but to Catholics and Christians worldwide. These images and performances were a gross violation of basic decency and respect due to religious beliefs and traditions.
Artistic license, while often celebrated, must be wielded with sensitivity and respect for the diverse beliefs held by individuals across the globe. The offensive representation during the opening ceremonies went far beyond acceptable boundaries, and this misguided attempt at creativity has caused significant distress and outrage.
The Olympics is a global event that should unite people from different cultures and backgrounds in a celebration of human athletic achievement and mutual respect. Unfortunately, the juxtaposition of the highest order of human athleticism with such a sordid and disconnected attempt to shock and provoke has undermined this noble goal. It is a tragic irony that the very platform meant to celebrate human excellence has been marred by a display that many view as a profound moral depravity.
Considering these events, I feel compelled to withdraw my support from this Olympics and from any advertisers associated with this event. I cannot, in good conscience, endorse an organization that allows such offensive and insensitive content to be broadcast to a global audience.
I urge the International Olympic Committee to take immediate and decisive action to address this issue. An official apology to the global Catholic and Christian communities is warranted, as well as a commitment to ensuring that future events are conducted with the respect and dignity that all cultures and religions deserve.
Thank you for your attention to this urgent matter. I hope the IOC will recognize this situation's gravity and take appropriate steps to rectify the harm done.
Sincerely,
Paul Plouffe
