The Governor of South Carolina (currently Henry McMaster, a Republican) has the authority to appoint a temporary replacement to fill Lindsey Graham’s U.S. Senate seat following his death on July 11, 2026.
Under the 17th Amendment and South Carolina law, when a Senate vacancy occurs (due to death, resignation, etc.), the governor can appoint someone to serve temporarily until a special election fills the seat.
