I concluded my day by inaugurating the Maasai Mara National Reserve (MMNR) Conservation Center at Keekorok, where we officially launched the MMNR website, logo, and a new annual MMNR magazine. This magazine will feature conservation efforts and key projects within the reserve.

At the Conservation Center, we introduced EarthRanger (ER), a robust software solution designed to support wildlife conservation. EarthRanger assists protected area managers, ecologists, and wildlife biologists in making informed decisions by providing real-time data from ranger patrols, remote imaging, and various sensors. Developed in 2015 by the Allen Institute for Artificial Intelligence, EarthRanger was inspired by the Great Elephant Census and reflects the late Paul G. Allen’s vision of leveraging AI for global conservation.

The Maasai Mara, like many protected areas, faces challenges such as habitat loss, poaching, community encroachment, and climate change. Implementing EarthRanger provides a comprehensive monitoring system for tracking wildlife movements, which span from localized areas to continent-wide migrations. By consolidating historical and real-time data with field reports, EarthRanger offers a unified view of tagged wildlife, ranger activities, and infrastructure across protected zones.

Aligned with the Maasai Mara Management Plan 2023–2032, which addresses the region’s critical challenges, the Narok County Government adopted EarthRanger to enhance professional management and address these issues. Partnering with The Safari Collection Footprint Trust and 51 Degrees Ltd, the county constructed a dedicated operations center with a state-of-the-art control room to manage EarthRanger data within the reserve. A Long-Range Wide Area Network (LoRaWAN) was also installed to strengthen monitoring capabilities.

EarthRanger’s impact in MMNR is significant. By providing real-time data on ranger patrols, tourism vehicle movements, and tagged wildlife, EarthRanger is helping reserve managers protect the Mara’s black rhino population, manage visitor impact, reduce tourist overcrowding, mitigate human-wildlife conflicts, and shape conservation strategies.

Our partners in this endeavor include the Narok County Government, 51 Degrees Ltd, The Safari Collection Footprint Trust, and the Maasai Mara National Reserve, with support from the Ministry of Tourism and Wildlife, UNDP, Connected Conservation Foundation, Sheldrick Wildlife Trust, American Rhino Foundation, Mara Conservancy, and Foundation Segré.

We also launched official stickers for all tour guides, fully funded by the County Government. I presented 200 stickers to the guides, each valid for one year. In the future, however, guides will be required to pay 10,000 Kshs annually for renewal.

Key representatives present included Riccardo Tosi from Safari Collection; Oli Dreike from Safari Collection & Footprint Foundation; Madalena Monoja, Deputy Resident Representative for UNDP; Svein Wilheimsen from Base Camp Foundation; Dominic Gramaticas, CSR Committee representative; Netty Jemutai from the IWT Project at the State Department for Wildlife; Edward Arkle, Project Manager at 51 Degrees; and Francis Nkoitoi, Board Member of WRTI.

I'm told Narok West MP along with Tunai, former Narok County governor today organised goons to try and heckle the Narok County Governor, Patrick Ole Ntutu in Kilgoris over lack of roads in the Kilgoris Town.

First of all, acheni uchochezi. Secondly kuweni na adabu. When we have a visitor like the head of state, William Ruto, you don't embarrass us Infront of visitors. Kwani mlilelewa wapi? Komeni.

Thirdly... Below are the just concluded roads that have been commissioned by the Governor last week. Kwani hamna macho ama nini? Ama Tunai has not been to Kilgoris recently so he doesn't even know what's happening Kwa ki-ground?

Again, hata kama, kwani what do you want? The road construction machines are currently in Kilgoris zikiwa Kazi.... Hamna macho?
