The discourse is stupid and meaningless and you’d have to be terminally online to care about any of it but it also pushed a lot of us to pay attention to the signal inside the noise. When this site dies I’m not sure where that type of learning will come from.
So I made a mastodon for bailing purposes and generally like to think I am anywhere (as a usual nonposter) for the quality content side of things but this very good point made me realize the reason I keep coming back here is to keep up on the dunks, the drama, and the shitposts.
We can all silo ourselves and do our own thing which is good in a way. I’m just scared it’ll mean losing the “heart” of the internet. Cause the shitposts and chaos and edges were how we figured out stuff like actually furries rule and libertarianism is maybe not a good ideology.
I scrolled past this picture in a meme I didn’t understand thinking nothing of it fifteen minutes ago and just now figured out it’s Johnny Depp and suddenly got it and immediately realized what being finally forced to log off this site will cost me
I’ve no idea what should be done in Ukraine I just really hope it doesn’t involve nukes and minimizes lives lost on whatever side. People are worth saving regardless of their birthplace. I’m scared that I’m scared to say that and that the mainstream opinion seems to differ.
I’m just a dude lying in bed unable to sleep worrying about the world and I understand the volatility of tweets but I’m kind of scared we’ve reached the point where folks I respect are calling people asking for peace in a possibly incorrect way traitors.
@GabeShepperd @joshman531@Tycash222@micah_erfan Or just read 🏴 accounts on here or any parts of anarchism Reddit for a while if you want more modern examples of that distrust still going on. I guarantee you’ll find tons of examples of very very leftist people that are against China, the USSR or tankies in general.
@GabeShepperd @joshman531@Tycash222@micah_erfan I mean most everything underneath the anarchism umbrella. Anarchists have been enemies of auth communism for over a century in part because of the USSR specifically targeting them. Here’s a random article on them fighting in Paris in the 20s. https://t.co/hLxQ31O5Ox
@joshman531@Tycash222@micah_erfan You’re aware there’s movements on the far left that aren’t authoritarian communists and are in fact against those regimes as well right?
An example of why you shouldn’t believe stuff on Twitter without verifying and how incorrect info spreads on here.
My assumption is this guy got a source’s data reversed since the real number is only 27% of Americans have never been to another country.
https://t.co/q5y8hQEzQC
The average person in the United Kingdom has visited 10 countries.
On average, Germans have been to eight.
The average French person has traveled to five.
Only 29% of Americans have even been abroad.
@jimmyfcampbell@JakeNomada He’s also just plain wrong. Charitable assumption is he got his numbers backwards as opposed to making stuff up for Twitter clout. Pew research found only 27% of Americans have never been to another country.
