Excited to share my reflections after attending the premiere of Mono tonight, an exceptional production brought to life by a talented Kenyan team.
Let me take you on a journey through my Mono story:
I was raised in the heart of urban Nairobi, in the comfort of an upper-middle-class home. However, my life took quite a turn when I entered a rural boarding school in form 1. Surviving one term was an achievement in itself, as the cultural shift and challenges were overwhelming. Being a Nairobi kid came with its own set of difficulties – some teachers and students treated us differently, and I often felt like an outsider.
The daily struggles were real – from finding weevils in my food to tackling early morning duties performed in freezing temperatures. Personal belongings, including my precious bucket, would mysteriously disappear. That bucket wasn't just a possession; it was a lifeline for washing clothes, fetching water for bathing, and ensuring personal hygiene. After enduring one term, I had to persuade my parents to transfer me to a different school.
In my educational journey, I encountered teachers who were not just educators but mentors, helping me discover my talents and inspiring me to strive for more. However, there were also those who left lasting traumas. Despite the challenges posed by the latter, I acknowledge that they, too, played a role in shaping my resilience.
Reflecting on these experiences reinforces my belief in the sacred nature of interacting with children in any role – whether as a parent, teacher, aunt, uncle, or mentor. We are not just shaping the present but molding the adults of the future. It is our responsibility to treat children and youth with utmost dignity, helping them uncover their identities, understand the world around them, and find their place in the circle of life.
Coming full circle to Mono, I'm proud to recommend this remarkable piece of art crafted by a couple from my Alma mater, @DaystarUni - Joyce Musoke and @Yafesi_Musoke
The film, now showing at Anga Cinema, Diamond Plaza, is not just well-executed but a testament to the creative brilliance that emerges from the Daystar community. I encourage everyone to witness this masterfully written and directed production that resonates with the essence of our shared experiences.
