GT have a decision to make. They can either be content with qualifying for the playoffs, which their bowling-heavy approach and solid Top 3 will keep delivering for them, or they can try to win a trophy by strengthening their middle order. Tuti Patriots Sundar has made it a little easier by showing signs of becoming a reliable follow-up to the Top 3, and Holder is a fine No. 8.
But they still lack at least 2 batters between 5 and 7, and it starts with getting one established lower-middle-order power hitter. It is not a coincidence that their initial success came when they had David Miller at his very best.
I have so much respect for most GT fans.
We are the most decent fanclub so far it seems.
3rd time in Finals. It's an achievement itself.
Better luck next time for us.

Gujarat Titans have so much to be proud of. And loved how Shubhman said that even if they’d won the trophy there were areas they identified work was needed. A stellar bowling line up, a supreme top order. And Shubhman really rose as a leader..
@siddtalks By doing all these, they are undermining all the good work done by their team. 🤦♂️Actually, for the first time since the IPL began, RCB is doing really well on all aspects
Reminder that Bill Ponsford was out hit wicket in two consecutive innings in the 1934 Ashes, his last Test series.
He made 181 and 266 in those innings.
What if this was an elaborate ad campaign by Sai Sudharsan? Next match, he walks out with a new bat, looks into the camera and says: "for better grip and sheer comfort, switch to MRF."
Vaibhav Sooryavanshi, the next Andrew 'Ender Wiggin!'
The reference to context is Ender's Game by Orson Scott Card, an amazing science fiction tale of (spoiler alert!) how all of earth decides that having well trained kids who are totally unburdened by the fear of failure are the best equipped to lead our planet's attack against an alien bug like civilization bent on destroying us.
The only difference was that 'Ender' and his fellow kids did not know that it was an actual battle, they thought they were playing a simulation and were not burdened at all with the possibility of defeat.
In this case Vaibhav knows exactly what is at stake for his team!
Got to love how almost every cricketer has acknowledged the phenomenon in front of them and avoided ugly celebrations or abuse against Sooryavanshi, even after getting smashed the fuck out. And when the celebration has been big, it has not been in his face. It has just been the delight of getting him out.
Nobody wants to be remembered as the silly person who looked cheap against a teen destined to become a future legend and dominate the next couple of decades.
This RCB coaching unit has to be one of the best T20 coaching units I have witnessed. Also I think this is the first time a coaching unit has cracked IPL going beyond the holy trinity of Dhoni, Gambhir and Rohit.
RCB are starting a new era in T20 cricket, the age beyond captain

Going by the general comments on social media around why IPL viewership has been diminishing, I’m putting together a bunch of reasons that fans are busy pointing out.
Let me know if I’m missing out on any aspect. Given that IPL has completed 18 seasons, I’m listing 18 points.
👇🏾
1. Viewer fatigue — many are lamenting the non-stop IPL schedule doesn’t allow breathing space and a decent recall value for the tournament. Midway through the season, it begins to get jarring. True!
2. Teams that used to bring massive numbers and engagement — like Mumbai Indians, Chennai Super Kings & Kolkata Knight Riders — are struggling. But flip-side is — others are doing well!
3. Quality of matches have gone down and one big reason for that is absolutely flat batting wickets that are leading to constant 225+ chases and leaving nothing for the bowlers — so no even contest between the bat and ball.
4. For a while now, the IPL has been subject to ordinary umpiring / refereeing. Earlier, only the best umpires and referees were allowed. Too much time is taken away during third umpire referrals for wides, no balls and boundaries.
5. TV ratings are falling because there’s been a bigger shift towards digital and those numbers haven’t been documented. Frankly, there’s no way to comprehensively document them.
6. Ban on RMG platforms, that brought about massive off-the-field traction. Fantasy sports is off the table. Esports as a sector is not developing.
7. If there’s not enough exceptional talent coming out of India grassroots, then the IPL either needs to find ways to boost SMAT or keep a close eye on grassroots talents in other countries or allow five overseas players instead of four. Make SMAT can be the official feeder line to IPL.
8. Poor storytelling around IPL, lack of enough fan engagement on part of cricket board and general commentary around the game lacking any kind of perspective.
9. Lack of new superstars. The void left in absence of players like Gayle, ABD, MSD (almost), Pollard etc hasn’t been filled adequately; current stars are in their last leg, and tournament probably needs more Sooryavanshis.
10. Poor in-stadia experience. There’s no advance scheduling. Ticketing is always a mess. Spending money on tickets orF&B inside the ground is never value for money. The local association does nothing to enhance experience.
11. IPL lacks any kind of off-season engagement with fans. It’s a very long off season but the moment the tournament gets over, the bandwagon moves on, only to return just in time for the next season.
12. The league offers nothing to overseas fans. There’s almost zero engagement with Indian fans abroad, who track the league and any other Team India engagement with absolute passion.
13. Fan parks are nowhere near what world class experiences are. Anybody who’s seen fan parks during global football tournaments or NBA or Grand Slams will know this.
14. Sponsorship interest keeps waning because sponsors don’t get to engage with the league in any way outside of general match visibility. There needs to be better engagement with central sponsors.
15. Hospitality is not world class. Lalit Modi tried to address this when he was around. But given where he was starting from, there was a mountain to climb.
16. There’s a desperate need for the IPL to adhere to stricter norms. Player regulations need to be stronger, IPL can’t have political affiliations (very important), there needs to be a stronger set of SOPs — rules and regulations — and fans should have access to it.
17. Pay more attention to what’s happening in leagues abroad and see what we can adopt from the best properties around the world. Simply comparing per-match values during media rights sale is not enough.
18. Better crowd control during matches and ensuring there are no unnecessary crowds on the field before and after the matches. It’s an eyesore. Keep the sanctity of the field intact.
Let me know if there are more thoughts that come to mind…
