for many people outside the climbing community, 14 peaks: nothing is impossible was likely their first introduction to nirmal “nimsdai” purja.
it was mine.
i have always been fascinated by mountaineering and the people willing to push into places most of us will never experience. the documentary introduced me to one of the sports most extraordinary climbers and gave me a much deeper appreciation for what he and so many others do in the worlds highest mountains.
if you have never seen it — it is well worth your time.
rest in peace, nims.
In loving memory of Nimsdai - the man who changed mountaineering forever. Before him, the world saw Nepalese climbers as background support - the silent force carrying the loads and clearing the path so others could take the credit. He changed that narrative forever, proving
Rodri, if you’re reading this I just want you to know I’ve made peace with it. You can leave my club. It’s your life at the end of the day. Thank you for everything you gave us.
But I find it bizarre. Genuinely strange, almost embarrassing, that you’d force a move to a club that treated you like nothing. A club whose own president doesn’t want you and reportedly has to be convinced to even accept you. A club that hurled all manner of insults at you the moment you won the Ballon d’Or and then had the audacity to boycott the very award you earned.
I don’t think you understand how frustrating this is for the loyal fans who stood by you. Who were with you through your ACL, through the darkest stretch of your career, who defended you against rival fans who mocked and slandered you at every turn.
I don’t think you understand how angry we are.
You could have ranked above the Vincents, the Davids, the Sergios, the Kevins, the Bernardos.
You could have gone down as the greatest player to ever walk through the Etihad. But you won’t. And we won’t ever view you the same way again.
Goodluck. 👍
