In 1999, a man named Aron Ralston went hiking alone in Bluejohn Canyon, part of the rugged wilderness near Utah. While climbing down a narrow canyon, a boulder suddenly shifted and trapped his right arm against the rock wall.
No phone signal. No one knew exactly where he was. No easy way out.
For five days, he was stuck there rationing a small amount of water, recording goodbye messages for his family, and facing the very real possibility that he might not survive.
Then something changed.
On the sixth day, weak and dehydrated, Aron made an unthinkable decision: he used a dull multi-tool to amputate his own arm in order to free himself.
It sounds unbelievable, but he did it.
After freeing himself, he still had to hike out of the canyon injured, exhausted, and alone before finally running into hikers who helped get him to safety.
Now here’s the part people don’t expect.
He didn’t just survive he rebuilt his life.
Aron went on to become a motivational speaker, got married, had a child, and even returned to climbing mountains this time with a prosthetic arm. His story later inspired the film 127 Hours.
