Our Vice-Chancellor, Prof. V Ramgopal Rao, shares his perspective in The Hindu on what we are actively building at BITS Pilani:
True meritocracy isn't just about who you admit, it's about ensuring finances never stand in the way of a deserving student.
At BITS Pilani, we are building a strong endowment, one where the endowment keeps fees affordable, sustains scholarships, and ensures that talent, not means, determines opportunity.
This is not ambition. It is the foundation we are laying, through every alumni contribution, every philanthropic partnership, every endowment fund that grows in service of the next generation of BITSians.

Have been hearing the word AI more than anything else over the last two days.
Jobs is one concern. The future of our SaaS companies is another.
India must follow a 3A strategy.
We did not invent the internet. Yet we built one of the largest IT services industries in the world around it.
We did not invent mobile telephony. Yet we created the worldโs largest and most affordable telecom networks.
We did not invent digital payments. Yet today UPI is a global case study in scale and inclusion.
We did not invent ICs. Yet, every 5th chip design engineer is Indian.
We did not invent vaccines. Yet we became the pharmacy of the world.
Invention is of course important. But scale, execution and application matter just as much.
In my opinion, the same will hold true for AI. We can build powerful applications on top of foundational models. We can create AI products that solve Indian problems at Indian scale. I would like to see a new TCS, a new WIPRO or an Infosys emerge from AI led product companies, not just services.
On adoption and absorption, we must begin early. When children start learning a second language, AI literacy should be introduced as a third language. Not coding alone, but understanding how to use, question and apply AI responsibly. While adoption needs to be policy driven, absorption can benefit from application of AI.
Yes, some jobs will disappear.
That has happened with every technology wave. But new roles will emerge in data, domain integration, AI governance, product engineering, Model validation, AI ethicists, robotics engineers, Human AI interaction designers etc.
If productivity of companies rises, governments have enough tax levers to ensure broader societal benefit.
India will be fine.
But only if we move decisively on Adoption, Absorption and Application. #AI #3Astrategy

My take is, we should absolutely invest in our own compute infrastructure, our own datasets, our own models where it makes strategic sense. No serious nation can ignore that layer. Strategic autonomy in critical technologies is important.
But we must also be pragmatic. Foundational models are capital intensive, compute hungry and evolve rapidly. Even if a few countries build the largest models, the economic value will be created across millions of applications built on top of them.
Indiaโs opportunity is twofold. Participate where we can build core capabilities. And at the same time, build world class applications at scale.
